The xx have won the 2010 Mercury Prize for their self-titled debut album and with it collect a cool £20,000 cash award. The prize honours the best album to have emerged from the UK and Ireland over the past 12 months. The winner was announced this evening at the Grosvenor Hotel in London.

The album beat out other releases that were put on the shortlist including Mumford & Sons, Paul Weller, Biffy Clyro, Dizzee Rascal, Wild Beasts and Laura Marling.

“We’ve had the most incredible year and it’s just felt like every day we’ve woken up to something incredible that we just weren’t expecting,” singer Oliver Sim said when accepting the award. “It’s felt a bit like a haze.” [Gigwise]
