Although Napster itself has played no role in our life for a long time, it’s worth it to take pause today and mourn the groundbreaking file-sharing turned Best-Buy owned streaming service’s last day in existence. Today, friends, the weird space cat is being put down.
Born out of a dorm room by Shawn Fanning in the late ’90s, the peer-to-peer service changed the music industry forever. Shut down in 2001 due to massive copyright infringement, the site re-launched under a paid subscription service model, and remained that way to this day. Since 2008, the site had been operating as a Best Buy company, when it was acquired for $121 million.
Today, the site will officially be merged with similar service Rhapsody, who announced last month that they had purchased the site and its subscribers from Best Buy, who, as part of the deal, will get a small stake in Rhapsody as well.
Things were never the same since you came along, Napster. And we thank you. Rest In Peace little kitty. [via CNN]
