Google has just released the figures for copyright takedown notices as part of its latest transparency report, and the numbers are pretty shocking. In the past month alone, nearly 1.3 million URLs have been requested for removal by just over 1300 copyright owners, which tells us two things: that there’s more than a few content monopolies going on, and that the number of piracy sites isn’t nearly as large as the number of files they share.

Of the top four sites reported, two of them are torrent sites while the others are uploading services. Of the top 16 copyright owners reporting to Google, 6 are part of the music industry, with the RIAA leading the way with nearly 7,000 complaints. Surprisingly, though, the music industry’s numbers pale in comparison to Microsoft, NBC and even BangBros, a porn site whose complaints doubled nearly every instance from the music side of things.
