How old is popular music in 2013? If you’re an aspiring hitmaker, are you more likely to dominate the Hot 100 in your early twenties, or your mid-thirties? We looked at the most recent Billboard charts, and worked out the average age of artists in the top 10 of the Hot 100 (songs), the Billboard 200 (albums), and the dedicated genre charts. How “adult” is adult contemporary, really? What’s the age difference between your average popular country music star and a popular rapper? Sure, age ain’t nothin’ but a number, but put your Aaliyah-isms aside for a moment and consider the relationship between a contemporary artist’s age, genre, and relative success.

Hot 100

1. Baauer (23 years old) – Harlem Shake
2. Macklemore (29 years old) x Ryan Lewis (24 years old) – Thrift Shop

Average age: 29.29 years old

The average artist in the top 10 of the Hot 100 is 29 years old.

Is anyone else surprised that the average age of the Hot 100 is pushing thirty? We expected something much younger. If you were to sum up the average age of the popular rankings on Hype Machine, it’d barely clock in at legal drinking age. To be fair, if you measure the age of today’s buzz bands in terms of blog years, they’re all practically grandparents, meaning they formed six months ago.

It looks like Canada favours artists who are slightly older. Dust off that old sampler you had back in college, it’s not too late to jump-start your pop-rap career!

Shocker! There’s almost a ten year age gap between artists with the most popular singles, and artists who actually sell albums. This is likely reflective of the age gap between music fans who still own CD players and music fans who probably refer to Green Day as “classic rock.”

Pop Songs

If your impending 30th birthday is stressing you out, just remember: you’re just as relevant as Macklemore. We know that comes off as a back-handed compliment, but we totally didn’t mean it that way.

Pound for pound, the Adult Contemporary chart is younger than the Pop Songs chart?! Here’s our takeaway: just because you’re young doesn’t mean your music isn’t boring. I’m looking at you, guy with a nearly identical first and last name.

Hot Country Songs

1. Blake Shelton (36 years old) – Sure Be Cool If You Did
2. Lady Antebellum (Average age: 29 years old) – Downtown

Combined age: 312.5
Average age: 31.25 years old

The average artist in the top 10 of the Hot Country Songs chart is 31 years old.

This number seems a little low for a genre that’s specifically designed to make grown men cry, perhaps impacted by a double-showing from impish 21-year-old country-Bieber Hunter Hayes. For proof re: songs specifically designed to make grown men lose their shit, see Lee Brice’s “I Drive Your Truck” above. There are only two things that can make me cry: that song, and thinking about the day my dog died.

The only thirty-plus rockers on this list are fun.’s Nate Ruess and Lumineers frontman Wesley Schultz. Good news, thirty-somethings: there’s still a chance you could “HO HEY” your way to to the top of the rock charts. Just start a super derivative folk-pop band, never take off your fedora, and grow out your sad, patchy facial hair.

It’s official: the youngest genre in music is R&B/hip-hop. Take heed, aging music fans! The easiest way to feel young again is to throw out all of your Tom Petty records and make Dat Piff your homepage.

Sorry, we don’t care if you’re over or under 28 years old. At no age is it appropriate to still be making “Harlem Shake” videos.
