Die Antwoord

Die Antwoord

Die Antwoord—meaning ”the answer” in Afrikaans—is a hip-hop collaboration between Ninja, Yo-Landi Vi$$er, and DJ Hi-Trek. The Cape Town hip-hop trio made a name for themselves with the release of two viral videos, “Enter the Ninja” and “Zef Side.” Die Antwoord are known for incorporating South African “Zef” elements and references into their music and image—Ninja describes it as having no money but still having style. Ninja has been rapping since the mid-90s under various styles and names, he and Yo-Landi have a daughter together.

Shortly after the release of their viral hits, Interscope Records flew Ninja and Yo-Landi to Los Angeles to sign a million-dollar record deal, but they ended up self-releasing their album Ten$ion after receiving negative feedback from the label regarding their lyrical content.

Fans of Die Antwoord include directors Neill Blomkamp (District 9) and David Lynch (Blue Velvet). Director David Fincher (The Social Network) was interested in casting Yo-Landi as Lisbeth Salander in the Hollywood remake of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, but she turned him down.

Die Antwoord are known for their mix of absurdity, genuine talent, and production values. They have released two albums so far: 2010′s $0$ and 2012′s Ten$ion.

News about Die Antwoord

  1. Die Antwoord will play themselves in 'District 9' director's new sci-fi movie

South African Zef ambassadors Die Antwoord have always had a penchant for all things freeky, so it comes as no real surprise that Yo-Landi Vi$$er and Ninja will be appearing as themselves as the lead roles in an upcoming "sci-fi comedy" project helmed by District 9 director (and fellow South African native) Neill Blomkamp.
  2. This week on Twitter: Drake graduates, Wiz Khalifa stacks cheese, and Lady Gaga beefs with Die Antwoord

At the end of each week, #Top40Tweets lists a cross-section of artists on the current pop charts and puts their tweets on display (along with their current chart number) for your enjoyment/scrutiny. This week, we look at 5 artists on the Billboard Music Charts. #2: Psy - Gangnam Style @justinbieber op op op op— PSY (@psy_oppa) October 17, 2012 Justin Bieber has the power to summon Psy with three magic words, but does anyone have the power to banish Psy when we've finally become sick of his stupid song and dance? FUN FACT: In case you're curious, "Oppa Gangnam style" translates to "big brother is Gangnam style," where Psy is referring to himself as Oppa. The Gangnam district of Seoul is a trendy, hip, and exclusive area, and Psy likens it to Beverly Hills. So basically, the chorus of Gangnam style is just Psy saying "I AM YOUR BIG BROTHER, LET'S GO SHOPPING." Psy seems destined to become a one-hit-wonder internationally, but he wouldn't be the first musician with a popular dance fad to do so. If you checked out our list of songs that have their own dance moves, you'd know that Psy doesn't really stand a chance. #88: Rick Ross - Diced Pineapples feat. Wale & Drake 97% on my final exam. 88% in the course. One of the greatest feelings in my entire life. As of tonight I have graduated high school!— Drizzy (@Drake) October 18, 2012 Degrassi's 11-year cycle is pretty gruelling, but now Drake has his pick of virtually any imaginary University or College. FUN FACT: Drake recently teamed up with A$AP Rocky, Kendrick Lamar, and 2 Chainz on a Noah "40" Shebib-produced collaborative single called "Fuckin' Problem." Listen below: #37 (R&B/Hip-Hop Songs): Wiz Khalifa - Remember You feat. The Weeknd All we do is get high and stacc cheese— Wiz Khalifa (@RealWizKhalifa) October 17, 2012 FUN FACT: Wiz Khalifa just released a new mixtape, Cabin Fever 2, just a couple of months before his next label release is set to drop. Check it out here. #58: Christina Aguilera - Your Body Believing one's own inflated ego too quickly before hard earned success can result in a quick lived flicker into a flame of downward spiral.— Christina Aguilera (@TheRealXtina) October 16, 2012 Are you perhaps speaking from Xperience, Xtina? FUN FACT: Christina Aguilera's cover art for Lotus has spawned more than a few photoshop memes. Check out the best below, via Buzzfeed: #14 (Dance/Electronic Albums): Lady Gaga - Born This Way i fink u freaky but you don't have a hit. hundred thousand tIckets sold in SA. #thatmyshit— Lady Gaga (@ladygaga) October 17, 2012 i guess its not a good idea to tell someone you're a fan. never mind! we get it, you're not a little monster. WE GOT IT.— Lady Gaga (@ladygaga) October 17, 2012 Lady Gaga asked Die Antwoord to open for her on tour earlier this year. The South African rap duo declined, and more recently lampooned Gaga in their "Fatty Boom Boom" video. FUN FACT: Amidst public scrutiny over her recent weight fluctuations, Lady Gaga is apparently releasing a line of "healthy bottled water." Before today, I thought the fact that water is good for you was implied, but hey, I'm no marketing major. Some people are saying that Lady Gaga's weight fluctuations have all been part of an evil marketing campaign to help launch the product. More importantly, I hope the bottle is shaped like an alien egg or something.
  3. 7 creepy GIFs from Die Antwoord's "Fatty Boom Boom"

Plot takes a backseat to Die Antwoord's general creepiness in their new video, which initially parodies Lady Gaga and South African stereotypes before devolving into quick bursts of terrifying mean mugging. The video might initially be poking fun at the group's brief stint with Interscope Records, when they reportedly denied the chance to open for Gaga, but it's more likely just an excuse to have a lion eat someone. Yeah, that happens, as does one brief, uncomfortable scene where the meat-wearing lookalike has some sort of bug pulled out of her snootch. But aside from the quick jab at pop stars (look for the graffiti :45 seconds in that shows a two headed, Kanye-Minaj faced cat shitting out the Black Eyed Peas), this video is mostly about the trio's...er...interesting outfits and dance moves. If you're at work, we made a few quick GIFs to summarize what you might be missing.

  5. Watch the new Die Antwoord video, "Baby's On Fire"

At this point it probably goes without saying that Die Antwoord make peculiar music videos, and their newest, for "Baby's on Fire" does little to change the course. If the video holds true, Ninja and Yolandi are brother and sister now and the former is far from a fan of the latter's boyfriend. What ensues is a weird six minutes of over protectiveness. Watch the clip up top.
