Today’s the big day! After months of preparation and incessant tabloid gossip permeating the air, it’s finally time for Kate and William to make it official. In honor of the Royal Couple, here’s the Top 10 songs we would have played at their reception if they’d actually invited us to DJ (thanks for nothing, Royal Couple).

10. Spin doctors – “Two Princes”

A fitting jam for William and his brother Harry. Two Princes hit #3 on the UK Charts in 1993. A few years later it came in at #21 on Blender’s 50 “Worst Songs Ever” list. Most recently, it came in at #10 on this list.

By the way, the Spin Doctors are still alive. They’ll tour the UK next month in honor of the twentieth anniversary of Pocket Full of Kryptonite. Later this year they’ll release a special edition of the album with “all kinds of fun extra features and things and stuff.”

9. Sex Pistols – “God Save the Queen”

William’s mother was as punk rock as any member of the modern day Royal family. In honor of Lady Di this Sex Pistols classic will get played sometime after the dinner when some family members are beginning to reach an inappropriate level of intoxication. Ideally Fergi will accompany the tune by playing air guitar on her crotch.

8. Silversun Pickups – “The Royal We”

We think this song is a good fit for the list. We decided that the word ‘Royal’ made it an acceptable choice and we figure that since Will and Kate are a couple they probably refer to themselves as ‘we’ every once in a while.

We also noticed that the front page of gift registry featured a Nintendo Wii. Imagine playing Wii Tennis at a wedding reception? Man those Royals now how to live!

7. Prince – “1999″

On the first day of DJ college, every student is given a rundown for working Royal Functions. Playing Prince tops the list, followed by not taking E Pills in front of the wedding party.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pnuijDieOvY

6. Johnny Cash – “Kate”

There’s no way Kate would ever cheat on Willy. But just in case she gets a little too friendly with the help at the reception, this song will be cued up and ready to play. It’s always good to have a back-up plan.

5. 2pac – “California Love”

Fun fact: the Queen is a massive Pac fan. She still hasn’t let the who East Coast/West Coast feud go either. During a recent interview with BBC Radio 1 – RnB/HipHop Elizabeth commented, “We ain’t singin’, we bringin’ drama. Fuck you and your motherfuckin’ mama. We gonna kill all you mothafuckas.”

4. Lady Gaga – “Dance in The Dark (Monarchy Remix)”

No wedding is complete without some Gaga. This Monarchy remix is the perfect fit for the Royal nuptials. The first time Prince Charles heard this version he immediately started snapping his fingers in the air and yelling ‘siiiiiiick.’

3. Will.I.Am. – “I Got It From My Mamma”

This song belongs on the list because the Prince and ‘artist’ share the same name. Reaching? Whatever.

2. Deftones – “Royal”

This song is for the staff. If you’ve ever waited tables at a wedding, you know it sucks balls. You’ve got to serve a seemingly endless amount of tables in an uncomfortable uniform while the DJ cranks Buster Poindexter.

But every once in a while that DJ goes out for a smoke, it’s at this point that one of the dishwashers can come out and hook up his iPod so everyone working can have a 3:33 escape from reality.

1. Common People – “Pulp”

From the outside, Prince William does seem like a genuine person. Who knows what he’s really like but at least on the surface he appears to be kinda normal. He spent time in the military, he likes to party and he plays polo for charitable causes; the guy is one divorce away from becoming a regular Joe Sixpack. The countdown is on!

The internet has been buzzing lately with emails and blogs showcasing the Situation bombing at the recent Comedy Central Roast

The internet has been buzzing lately with emails and blogs showcasing the Situation bombing at the recent Comedy Central Roast of Donald Trump. It’s been out for over a week and the clip continues to get passed around.

While some celebrities have a tough time delivering the funny during a roast, there are a few musicians who are actually pretty good at it. Here’s a look at the top five.

5. Tommy Lee at the Roast of Pamela Anderson

Anyone who’s seen the notorious sex tape must find it tough to watch Tommy Lee talk about his relationship with Pamela Anderson and not picture his giant wang. That thing could have it’s own roast.

In case you missed it, it was reported that screenwriter Rick Wilkes is recruiting Ashton Kutcher to play the Motley Crue drummer in the upcoming big screen adaptation of the Dirt.

(sorry for the video quality. Big ups to Charo at the 0:49 mark!)

4. Flavor Flav at the Roast of Flavor Flav

Flavor Flav is a train wreck. But a good train wreck. His appearance at his own roast was funny and kind of awkward. He looks like he’s about to break down. You can see the clip (5 of 5) here.

The rapper is putting together another reality TV show. Flav is in talks with Iowa’s Clinton high school about a new series called Flavor Flav Goes Back to School.

The show will revolve around his journey to earn a high school diploma. Along with gaining an education, he said he hopes it will inspire people everywhere.

3. Courtney Love at the Roast of Pamela Anderson

Man. Courtney Love is awesome. She’s a great musician and entertaining as hell. Her appearance at the Pamela Anderson roast proved she doesn’t take herself to seriously either. At least when she’s high.

Love was recently in the news for something non-drug related; an unreleased song featuring the rock queen and her late husband will be featured in the new film Hit So Hard. The movie is a documentary that tells the story of former Hole drummer Patty Schemel.

2. Ice T at the Roast of Flavor Flav

To be fair, all the celebrities on these roasts have their jokes written for them, so it’s all about delivery. Ice T kills this set like it was a cop.

This September, Ice T will release his debut novel Kings of Vice. The story follows Marcus “Crush” Casey, an ex-gang leader in a New York City on the edge of social and economic collapse. Crush walks out of Attica Penitentiary after serving 20 years behind bars with the realization that he must be part of the solution. But first, he must take back his gang from the backstabbing lieutenant who handed him over to the feds. Neat!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ovtiKFEwSA

1. Snoop Dogg at the Roast of Donald Trump

With all the attention for this roast going to the Sitch bombing, some great moments from the night were overlooked. Including this hilarious set from Snoop. His delivery flows like his songs and he’s got great timing. Someone should put a beat behind this and throw it on iTunes.

Snoop has recently endorsed a new caffeinated alcoholic beverage called Blast by Colt 45. The drink has twelve percent alcohol and comes in grape, raspberry and pomegranate flavors.

Several people have already come out and tried to ban the product, including New York City Councilman Robert Jackson. Critics say the drink is hazardous for young people because it can be confused with soft drinks.

When the Rockabilly revival of the 1970s happened, there was one artist who was at the forefront of the movement:

When the Rockabilly revival of the 1970s happened, there was one artist who was at the forefront of the movement: Robert Gordon. While the revival has long since passed, Gordon continues to perform to loyal audiences across the globe. After a recent Toronto show, the singer sat down with AUX to discuss being part of the infamous CBGB punk rock scene, 1970s rockabilly and performing on the first episode of Late Night with Conan O’Brien.

AUX: As an artist, you’ve crossed multiple genres. Is there one style of music that appeals to you more than others?

Robert Gordon: I like all kinds of music. I was brought up in the Washington DC area and that was sort of a hot bed. Being close to Virginia there was country music, lots of R&B in D.C., it was a lot of rock and roll. Basically if it’s a good song I can get into it. Doesn’t matter what genre.

You’re generally associated with Rockabilly music but you’ve also got roots in the legendary New York punk scene of the 1970s through the Tuff Darts.

The Tuff Dart thing just sort of happened when I was looking to get back into music. I had a business in New York and a family at that time, I guess you could say I was going through some changes, lyrically it was kind of angry so it was a good way to get out my frustrations. We became one of the premiere punk acts in the CBGB’s heyday. Blondie, Ramones, Richard Hell, Television, we all rehearsed in the same joint. It was a good time. But it wasn’t really where my heart was.

How did you go from that punk scene back to rockabilly music?

At the time, producer Richard Gottenhrer saw me and we hooked up. He got me my first recording deal with Private Stock Records. We went to RCA after that. It was an exciting time in the late 70s and early 80s. Since then I’ve done numerous independent releases but the record business has changed physically as you know.

What do you think triggered the rockabilly revival of the early 80s?

It was like a whole new thing for a whole new generation. It was something that people hadn’t heard. Rockabilly per se wasn’t that successful when it was first out there. I’ve been tagged as a rockabilly artist but if you come to my performances or listen to my records, I did a lot of new songs, a lot of modern songs, I did a lot of contemporary things at the same time but I just sort of put on my own feel.

Will Rockabilly ever rise back to popularity like it did back then?

It’s basic rock and roll with a country flare and I think that will always appeal to people. When I was doing it I don’t think I could have been given any bigger of a shot than my label gave me. RCA did a huge amount of promotion, this was before MTV and I got more airplay than most of the groups that got on MTV and became huge stars. The problem now is that there’s no way for people to hear it. It’s not on the radio, unless it’s alternative radio.

Comedy junkies know you as the first musical guest to perform on Late Night with Conan O’Brien. What was that experience like?

It was great. I love performing in front of people and Conan is an old school rock and roll fan, so it was kind of a natural fit. I think he enjoyed it too. I know a lot of the guys in the [show’s] band. I’ve worked with a lot of the guys from the Letterman show too. Anton [Fig] was my drummer for a long time, Paul Shaffer played on many of my records, so it’s sort of a family thing when it comes down to it.

What does the future hold for Robert Gordon?

[Guitarist Chris] Spedding and I are back together again, we’re going to be performing together in Europe in the March and we’ve been writing some songs together so I’m looking forward to getting back into the studio with him.

Tonight (or early tomorrow morning if you want to be a dick about it) we move the clocks forward. Soon

Tonight (or early tomorrow morning if you want to be a dick about it) we move the clocks forward. Soon our evenings will be filled with sunlight and vampires will be forced to stay home for a few more hours. In honor of the festivities, we present our Top 10 songs for Daylight Savings.

10. “Here Comes the Sun” by the Beatles

This Beatles jam is a great song to have programmed in the alarm clock and thanks to daylight savings, the tune will come on an hour earlier as of tomorrow.

In 1977, Carl Sagan attempted to include “Here Comes the Sun” as part of the Voyager Golden Records that were sent into space aboard the Voyager Space Craft probes. The hope was that aliens would find the material some 40,000 years later; however, EMI refused to release the rights and the song was not included. That label keeps it real.

9. “Killing Time” by Pennywise

Removing an hour from the day is sort of like killing time? Though the hour does come back in the fall, which almost makes it Christ-like… Either way, this song comes from the album About Time, so it’s worthy of a spot on the list.

8. “Clocks” by Coldplay

Coldplay will have a busy summer this year. Chris Martin and company will release the follow up to 2008’s Viva la Vida and they’ll play a number of festivals including Galstonbury, T In the Park, and Oxygen Festival.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5KkWGy7W3_o

7. “Rock around the Clock” by Bill Halley

At this time of year, you’re gonna want to rock in a clockwise motion. It’s more natural and will help maintain the spring-forward consistency. Save that crazy counterclockwise dancing for the fall.

6. “Sex O’Clock” by Tiga

Sometimes you’re putting together a Top 10 List of Daylight Savings Time songs and you hit a road block. You need one more tune to fill out the inventory, so you Google ‘clock songs’ and this little diddy pops up.

It’s a life-altering moment to say the least. Not only is the list complete, but from now on anytime an attractive person approaches you and asks for the time you’ve got one answer and one answer only. Thanks Tiga, for everything.

5. “Turn Back Time” by Cher

If she could turn back time, she would, but she can’t. Fortunately it’s the time of year to move the clocks ahead, so it all works out. Including this song on the list might be a bit of a reach… but whatever. The video features a woman in her forties dressed like an east coast stripper walking around a battle ship. That’s worth watching.

4. “Time” by Blind Melon

Lots of great artists have written a song called “Time,” including Pink Floyd, Ozzy, Sarah McLachlan, Tom Waits, Anthrax, Edwin Star, and Cat Stevens (just to name a few). Hootie and the Blowfish and Creed have too.

For this list, the song title is represented by Blind Melon with the track from their 1992 self-titled album. A great song from an amazing album.

Blind Melon continue to perform under the band name with vocalist Travis Warren, which is lame.

3. “Spring Forward” by Tiger Army

Tiger Army’s frontman Nick 13 is keeping busy with his solo project and will be part of SXSW next week in Austin. According to his Twitter page he’s working on a new album and was in the studio as of Friday.

2. “Sunny Hours” by Long Beach Dub Allstars

It’s all about the sunny hours. Having the sunshine late into the evening makes life much more enjoyable. So does this song. And this video.

1. “Time Is On My Side” by the Rolling Stones

During the spring and summer it really feels like time is on your side. You can sleep in, have a late lunch and still get out in time for a solid vitamin D fix. Good times are on the way. Happy clock changing!

It’s Oscar night. A time to bring together family and friends for an evening of entertainment and celebratory dips. While the focus of the ceremony belongs to the film industry, there’s also some great musical content throughout the night. In honor of the big event we present the 10 best musical moments in Oscar history.

10. Ben by Michael Jackson
Film: Ben

It’s always surreal to see Michael Jackson pre-plastic surgery. This performance is from the 1973 Academy Awards. Jackson was fourteen at the time. The amount of natural talent he displays at such a young age is incredible.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zqU1VywcZBM

9. I’ve Seen it All by Bjork
Film: Dancer in the Dark

Nice song. Nice performance too. But it’s hard to take a performer seriously when they’re singing with what looks like a piece of roadkill draped around their body. Goose necks aren’t supposed to fold like that.

8. Sooner or Later by Madonna
Film: Dick Tracy

Good lord this is sexy. It’s no wonder that Warren Beatty starting dating the Queen of Pop during the making of this film. The age difference was a little weird, but in Warren’s defense he probably thought she was Marilyn Monroe.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y8c8R2gQ3RE

7. It’s Hard Out Here for a Pimp by Three 6 Mafia
Film: Hustle and Flow

If there’s one thing that the Academy can appreciate, it’s the fact that it’s hard out there for a pimp. Seeing everyone laugh as the song is declared the winner is great.

6. Dreamgirls by Jennifer Hudson and Beyonce
Film: Dreamgirls

An amazing showcase of talent from two of the finest vocalists in music.

**Question: Is that a nipple appearance at the 2:02 mark?

5. Philadelphia by Neil Young
Film: Philadelphia

The soundtrack for Philadelphia features rock and roll heavyweights like Neil Young, Bruce Springsteen, and Daniel Lanois. There’s even a version of CCR’s Have You Ever Seen the Rain performed by the Spin Doctors. Huge.

4. Blaze of Glory by Bon Jovi
Film: Young Guns II

It doesn’t matter if you’re a cowboy on the run from the law or a dancer going on stage for your third song, this jam is goddamn awesome. So is Bon Jovi’s sequined vest.

3. Get Off the Stage Song by Will Ferrell and Jack Black

A perfect solution for long-winded acceptance speeches. Could also be used during afternoon board meetings and holiday dinners.

2. Miss Misery by Elliot Smith
Film: Good Will Hunting

A beautiful rendition of Elliot Smith’s song that was featured during the credits of Good Will Hunting. The late singer described performing in front of the Oscar audience as surreal, but noted that it was “fun to walk on the moon for a day.”

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DaEh2RKCDPc

1. Streets of Philadelphia by Bruce Springsteen
Film: Philadelphia

This song won the 1994 Oscar for Best Original Song over some classic movie tunes including The Day I Fall in Love from the timeless piece film Beethoven’s 2nd. That’s why he’s called The Boss.

Happy birthday Billy Joe Armstrong! The Bay-area rocker is celebrating his thirty-ninth year on the planet just days after winning

Happy birthday Billy Joe Armstrong! The Bay-area rocker is celebrating his thirty-ninth year on the planet just days after winning yet another Grammy Award.

In honor of Billy Joe’s special day annnnnd his band’s forthcoming live CD/DVD release let’s break down ten reasons why Green Day are awesome as fu*k.

10. Awards

Green Day single handedly kept the trophy-case industry afloat throughout the recent tough economic times. Their list of awards includes multiple Grammy’s, Brit Awards, American Music Awards, a People’s Choice Award and four Kerrang! Awards. But if you had to gamble on the one that sits on Billy Joe’s bedside table, the smart money would go on the 2005 Juno for best international band. Respect.

9. Charity Releases

Green Day have used their talent and fame to help out multiple charities. In 2006 they teamed up with Rick Rubin and U2 to record the Skids song The Saints are Coming with proceeds being used to replace instruments lost in Hurricane Katrina.

That same year they opened a website with the National Resources Defense Council to raise awareness about America’s dependency on oil.

And In 2007 the trio contributed a version of John Lennon’s Working Class Hero to the album Instant Karma: The Amnesty International Campaign to Save Darfur.

8. Foxboro Hot Tubs and the Network

The perks that come with being one of the biggest bands on the planet are pretty remarkable. Sure there’s the fame and fortune, the freedom to travel and perform to audiences across the planet. But when you’re really huge you can create alias’ and start releasing material under different band names. That’s some superhero shit.

7. Broadway Play

American Idiot: the Musical opened on April 20, 2010 on Broadway. The production won the Tony Award for Best Scenic Design of a Musical and was also nominated for Best Lighting Design and the coveted Best Musical award.

Billy Joe is currently playing the role of St. Jimmy until February 27 when Davey Havok will take over. Last week it was announced that the play will tour North America in 2010, no word yet if there will be a stop at the Gilman.

6. Rock Band Video Game

Grammy Awards are great. Selling millions of albums is nice too. But having your own video game is some next-level awesomeness. The only other group to have their own version of Rock Band is the Beatles. Now, thanks to Electronic Arts anytime Billy Joe crosses paths with Paul McCartney the two will have something worth talking about.

5. The Simpsons Movie

There’s only one reason any musician aspires to become a rock star: to have Moe hit you in the crotch with a rock.

4. Live Show

Anyone who’s seen Green Day in concert can attest to their amazing live show. The positive energy and good vibes that come from the stage are infectious and can cause incessant dancing, singing and mud chucking.

3. American Idiot

If Entourage has taught us anything it’s that the most difficult thing about superstardom isn’t achieving it, it’s maintaining it. While Insomniac, Nimrod and Warning were great, it was American Idiot that catapulted the band back to the global fame that was first experienced with Dookie.

American Idiot sold over fourteen million copies, won the 2005 Grammy for Best Rock Album and topped album charts in nineteen different countries.

2. 924 Gilman Street

As soon as Green Day signed to a major label punk rock fans were quick to brand them sellouts. Billy Joe addressed the issue in a 2005 interview stating:

“Sometimes I think we’ve become totally redundant because we’re this big band now, we’ve made a lot of money – we’re not punk rock any more. But then I think about it and just say, ‘You can take us out of out a punk rock environment, but you can’t take the punk rock out of us.’
When we started it was a proven fact that punk could not get popular. So we never played punk rock to get famous”

Which ever side of the argument you’re on there’s no debating that the band got it’s start at one of North Americas most legendary punk rock venues.

1. Dookie

One of the most successful albums to come out of the nineties. Dookie sold over fifteen million copies and produced three number one hits on the US Modern Charts. The LP also won the Grammy for Best Alternative Music album in 1995 and is ranked #50 on the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s Definitive 200 List.

The album helped define a generation and set Green Day on the path to awesomeness.

One of Canada’s most infamous rock and roll landmarks is about to celebrate its 20th anniversary with a month long

One of Canada’s most infamous rock and roll landmarks is about to celebrate its 20th anniversary with a month long celebration. Toronto’s Bovine Sex Club first opened a little over two decades ago and has since become the home away from home for some of the biggest artists on the planet. Along with being a rock and roll hangout, the venue hosts countless punk rock, hardcore, and straight-up rock and roll shows.

Originally founded by an eclectic group of Toronto nightlifers—including DJ Chris Sheppard, Wes (Happy Dog) Thuro, and current owner Darryl Fine—the Bovine has been frequented over the years by the likes of the Foo Fighters, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Queens of the Stone Age, The Strokes, Motley Crew, Kings of Leon, and Joe Strummer (to name a few).

AUX sat down with Darryl to discuss the history of the bar and some of its more memorable moments with some of the biggest names in music.

AUX: Take us back to the beginning. When did the Bovine first open?

Darryl Fine: We opened on January 2, 1991. Nobody came for the first three weeks, even though at least five hundred people have told me they were here on the first night. Around the middle of February, the place exploded and we were busy six nights a week. Every night except Wednesday. We don’t know why Wednesdays never worked, but we were busy six out of seven nights. It took off really quickly.

How did the three of you come up the vision for the Bovine?

The idea for the Bovine came up after going to New York and Paris and a few other places. We were young and adventurous and we kind of knew what we were gonna do next. We visited a place in New York called the Scrap Bar that was full of junk, but not as much junk as the Bovine. They had three things on the wall and a bunch of spray paint, whereas the Bovine is an apocalyptic explosion of scrap metal and reused material. We sort of honed in on their idea. Scrap Bar was a very hipster, crazy New York place. We’re not New York, but certainly Toronto has its own hipster edge. We tried to take this really great idea of having this post apocalyptic art and mess at the Bovine and mix in a real traditional meeting place. Kind of like a rock and roll Cheers.

So it started out as a bar as opposed to a live music venue?

We started without live music. We played a lot of retro rock. We were running cassette and Beta tapes. We’d mix three hours of music onto that format because there were no compact disks at the time. And when they did come out they certainly weren’t recordable so you couldn’t make compilations. So when a band like Kyuss would come in, Josh [Homme] would visit our DJ and actually give her the a mix on cassette tape. It was all DJ driven after parties.

When did you start bringing in bands to perform?

The live stuff came from the change over in the crowd. About five years in, we started to have live rock for special events and then we created what was called ‘A Band Week’ every month. I mean, let’s face it, all the people coming here played in bands, all the people working here were in bands, everyone was going to concerts, everyone was bringing people back for the after-party, we were kind of like that home away from home for bands on the road. So we decided to start having live music and that changed everything.

What are some of your more memorable performances?

We’ve had Brant Bjork play here. One time Perry Ferrell got on stage and borrowed equipment when he was touring Satellite Party. He did four Porno for Pyros songs and four Jane’s songs. There were only forty people here when he started but by the time he hit the fourth song there were 140. And by the time he finished we were at capacity. That’s how fast the text messages went out. Against Me! did a show here that was unplugged, but plugged in. They called it acoustic but it was really rock, it was unbelievable.

Why do you think so many artists frequent the Bovine?

It’s kind of like their home away from home. There’s not a lot of hassle factor here. If you’re a famous person and you’re in the crowd it’s pretty respectful. People might come up to you once in a while and ask for your picture, but there’s no shit show from the customers. Joe Strummer used to come in here when we had a smoking room; he’d bring his drum tobacco and papers and chain smoke for hours. He’d talk to people and just hang out. Even on the slowest nights, he was really comfortable. [Marilyn] Mason was the same way. He used to come in without his makeup on and just hangout. I think it’s easy for musicians to envision the Bovine as their local spot in Toronto where they can be with rock and roll people, but it’s not a big hassle. The drinks are stiff, not too expensive, the music is loud and they’ll probably end up talking to other musicians.

You’ve had countless artists frequent this place. What have been some of the more shock and awe nights at the Bovine?

[Joe Strummer] was huge for me. But mostly because he came on his own sometimes. I think the biggest shock and awe night was probably in ’92 after the U2 concert at the old CNE. They were certainly the biggest band in the world at the time. Somehow Chris and Wes got them to come back here. That was a really big night. I’d look over to see my buddy playing pool with the Edge. [Adam] Clayton was in the basement smoking cigarettes with his wife, while Bono was in the back room hanging out… and of course he wore his glasses the whole time. It was crazy having the biggest band in the world at your bar. There were other crazy nights too. Lollapalooza came down once after the show with every band from the mainstage. Ministry, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Ice T, Ice Cube, George Clinton, P Funk, everyone was in the room at the same time, six limos were parked out front. All those guys were great. We’ve had great nights with Lenny Kravitz…we’ve had lots of crazy nights here.

Is it possible for you to become star struck any more?

For sure. When it’s someone I’m really into at the time, that makes more difference to me than a nostalgia band. I’d like to meet the Rolling Stones at the Bovine, but I don’t think it would be as big a thrill as meeting Jack White here. Something that’s more present than past, ya know? When Velvet Revolver came to town, it was first thing anyone in Guns N Roses had done in years. They came by and took over the bar and Scott [Weiland] was in his prime. That was a real festive night. I’m not the biggest Velvet Revolver fan, but I liked their music when it came out. And of course when Slash is at the bar, it’s like heaven.

What shows have you put together for your month long 20th Anniversary Celebration?

We’ve picked some current stuff that’s up and coming. Our opening show is through our association with Warped Tour. Our relationship with Kevin [Lyman] has existed as long as Lollapalooza has been coming to Toronto. He used to be the production guy for that before he started the Warped Tour. Kevin wandered in here years and years ago and we’ve become really good friends. The Bovine does an after party at the Warped Tour backstage every time it comes through Toronto, so to kick off our 20th anniversary showcase we invited Kevin up to DJ. We’ll also have the Flatliners perform with St. Alvia and Hunter.

On the 17th, we have Carol Pope playing and we’re gonna redress the bar with big visuals. On March 4th and 5th we’re hosting the reunion of the Asexuals. We’re also holding a reunion for the Sinisters and they’ll play with Damn 13. We have a lot of bands coming back and a lot of new bands. It’s kind of a mix.

On Friday it was announced that Slash and Usher would join the Black Eyed Peas for this year’s Super Bowl halftime show. And really, why not? Super Bowl half time shows are all about cramming various musicians and pop stars together on one stage to lip sync their biggest hits. Combining that much star power from so many different musical genres provides huge entertainment value; not necessarily because of the talent, but because of the potential for uncomfortable moments.

Here’s our Top 5 Awkward Super Bowl Half Time Moments.

5. Superbowl XLIII – The Boss’ Crotch Cam

In 2009, Bruce Spingsteen and the E Street Band performed one of the best half time shows in Super Bowl history. The boys from Jersey rocked out a set that included Born To Run, Working on a Dream, Tenth Avenue Freeze Out and a football-skewed version of Glory Days.

But the Boss’ greatest moment came via a sliding crotch-smash into a floor level camera: a true testament to the tireless work ethic of the stage crew and their buffing techniques.

4. Superbowl XXVII – Michael Jackson’s Chris Angel Intro

Here’s the conversation that went down between the half-time producer and his director leading up to Superbowl XXVII.

Producer: Okay, we’re working with one of the biggest stars in the history of pop culture. The legendary Rose Bowl Stadium is our venue and we’ve got one of the largest television audiences of the year. How are we going to kick off the show?

Director: Two words: body doubles.

Producer: I’m sorry?

Director: We hire a couple of Michael Jackson impersonators from Vegas and have them appear around the stadium.

Producer: I’m listening…

Director: Each one will bust out of a giant TV screen accompanied by fireworks with the final one, the real Michael, magically appearing on stage.

Producer: I don’t like it…

Director: Oh.

Producer: I love it!

3. Super Bowl XXXV – the Clusterfuck

The lineup for this halftime show looks like it was put together by throwing darts at a wall in a Hard Rock Café. Top 3 moments:

1. Joe Perry looking like a creepy uncle at 0:15
2. JC Chasez’s shirt
3. Nelly busting in a 1:22 just to give the whole thing some “street cred”

2. Superbowl XXV – New Kids On The Block

Sometimes you wonder why everyone living outside of the U.S. hate Americans so much. Then you watch this half-time show and it all makes sense.

Donnie Wahlberg actually tweeted a link to this video before last years game with the caption, “I’d rather eat rusted nails than watch this but, in the spirit of the game, maybe you’ll enjoy.” That’s debatable. Especially since there’s often an abundance of dips laying around during the game.

1. Super Bowl XXXVIII – Nipplegate

The actual wardrobe malfunction wasn’t all that awkward. It was barely noticeable actually. It was the entire country losing their goddamn minds the next day that made the entire thing newsworthy.

The incident inspired some great comedy from the likes of Lewis Black, David Letterman, and the Onion. The FCC received nearly 540,000 complaints from Americans and Viacom had to pay out $3.5 million as a result.

But what was lost in all of this was the work of Mark Roberts. Moments after the nipple appeared, Roberts took to the field wearing only a g-string attached to half of a miniature football that covered his genitals. He was taken out by New England reserved linebacker Matt Chatham and then arrested by stadium security. Arguably the best hit of the game.

It’s been a while since a festival has created the kind of insane frenzy that’s happening with Coachella 2011. And

It’s been a while since a festival has created the kind of insane frenzy that’s happening with Coachella 2011. And with a lineup that includes bands like Arcade Fire, the Strokes, Kayne West, Interpol, the Black Keys, and Bright Eyes, the reaction makes sense.

Obviously, one of the biggest stories that came along with last week’s announcement was the reunion of Death From Above 1979. For [at least] one show, Jesse Keeler and Sebastian Granger will put their personal differences aside and reunite for a glorious desert session.

In honour of the DFA reunion, let’s take a look at the Top 10 Two-Piece bands and see what they’re up to now.

10. Pet Shop Boys

Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe’s next project comes with a little culture. The Pet Shop Boys have teamed up with choreographer Javier De Frutos to create a full-length dance production based on the literary fairytale the Most Incredible Thing. The show will run from March 17-26 at the Sadler’s Wells in London, England. Classy.

9. Tenacious D

Jack Black and Kyle Gass are working on a new album that should be released by the end of the year. “We’re gonna be talking about love, there are gonna be some songs about sex and there’s gonna be songs about food,” explained Black.

He also suggested that another film staring the pair is a possibility, though this time around it would “probably be on the lower-budge.”

8. The Ting Tings

The Ting Tings followup to 2008’s We Started Nothing is set to be released this May but Katie White and Jules de Martino have recently discussed scrapping the entire album in favor of some brand new material.

de Martino told Skynews that the decision will be a “tough call because the album’s all been mixed… but the new songs are really fresh.”

7. Lightning Bolt

Brian Chippendale and Brian Gibson are yet another great band that will perform at Coachella in 2011. If you’re one of those compulsive gambler types that just has to bet on which band will have the best set off the main stage, Smooth Jimmy Apollo is picking Lightning Bolt as his Lock of the Week.

6. Woodhands

According to Woodhands MySpace, the band is in the midst of some “Mad writing days.” While Dan Werb and Paul Banwatt work on the follow up to Remorsecapade, they’ll also get out and play some festivals, including Toronto’s Wavelength that runs February 16-20 and the Great Escape Festival that takes place this May in the UK.

5. Local H

Last October, Scot Lucas and Brian St. Clair released Local H’s Awesome Mix Tape #1 featuring covers of bands like Pink Floyd, Agent Orange and Concrete Blonde, among others.

While the songs were great, what took the album to the next level of awesomeness was the fact that the Illinois band put out limited edition versions on cassette. Finally, a reason to bust out the walkman.

4. Daft Punk

Now that all the rumors surrounding the Third Twin have been put to rest, Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homen-Christo can go back to focusing on what they do best: making great electronic music and appearing in those wacky CTV commercials that appear during NFL games.

3. The Black Keys

Last weekend, the Black Keys made their debut on the PBS show Austin City Limits. Their set included ‘Next Girl,’ ‘Howlin’ For You,’ ‘Tighten Up,’ ‘She’s Long Gone,’ ‘I Got Mine,’ ‘Thickfreakness,’ and ‘I’ll Be Your Man.’ You can check out the entire show (which includes a performance from Sonic Youth) here.

2. The White Stripes

Remember this? Here’s reason number eleven. Last November, Jack White told Vanity Fair that he and Meg were ready to “get back into the studio and start fresh.”

While White Stripes fans wait on the reunion, they can check out the reissues of the 2001 Captain Beefheart Covers that came out earlier this month in honor of the late songwriter.

1. Death From Above 1979

This reunion for Coachella really came out of nowhere. In 2008 Sebastian Granger told Eye Weekly that the breakup was “entirely personal” and he felt “a lot of frustration and anger but a lot of relief.”

Those in the know have suggested that the duo will play a few festivals throughout the year, but a full-on reunion (new album and tour) isn’t likely.

Say hello to the dog days of winter. The roads are bright white from too many saltings. There are fewer people on the sidewalks. And on street corners across the city, the homeless have been replaced by giant grey mounds of snow. This time of year can be depressing. The days are short, the weather is harsh, and the holiday debt still lingers. Most legit doctors will tell you that the best way to cure the winter blues is to air drum your way out of them.

Whether you’re stuck behind an office desk or sitting in traffic, there’s no better way to battle depression than a solid air drum session. Unless you have access to some illicit substances, that would be ideal. But failing that, air drumming is your best option. Here’s the top ten songs to rock out to:

#10 Supersonic by Oasis

Supersonic provides a perfectly simple, 4-4 time drum beat. There’s a double kick throughout the song to keep things interesting but it’s basic enough that you can pull it off while participating in a conversation and/or reviewing company memos.

#9 Things are Getting Better by N.E.R.D.

Not for the casual air-drummer. This song requires a loose wrist and a timing that’s usually reserved for professional bowlers. But what Fred Borden can’t teach you is the endurance that’s requiered to make it through the entire four minutes and sixteen seconds of this jam. That takes practice.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1wLll0PYKbs

#8 This Could Be Anywhere in the World by Alexisonfire

With all due respect to Jesse Ingelevics, Jordan Hastings was the missing piece Alexisonfire needed to get to the next level. His ability to switch up timings and create thunderous fills are one of the key ingredients to defining the bands unique sound.

#7 No One Knows by Queens of the Stone Age

No air drumming list would be complete without Dave Grohl. Smells Like Teen Spirit could have easily made this Top 10. One could argue that there’s even a place for Smells Like Nirvana. But for this list Grohl will be represented with No One Knows. A song that’s so good Weird Al wouldn’t go near it.

#6 This Respirator by the Flatliners

Anchorless Records recently announced that they’ll be releasing a new series of four way split 7”s this spring. The first one features Chris Creswell of the Flatliners along with Brendan Kelly of Lawrence Arms, Mike Hale of In the Red/Gunmoll and Jeff Rowe.

#5 How You Like Me Now by the Heavy

GREAT: The animation in this video.
GREATER: The beat in this song.
GREATEST: The pencil-thin mohawk on the lead singer’s head.

#4 Lust for Life by Iggy Pop

Iggy Pop will be lend his vocals to the next release from the experimental hard rock project Praxis. “Profanation: Preparation For A Coming Darkness” will also feature collaborations with Serj Tankian, Mike Patton and Wu Tang protégé Killah Priest. The album will hit store shelves February 8.

#3 Paradise City by Guns N’ Roses

To air drum this song properly you’ve got to nail the opening. Start off slow and nurse the high-hat. Then bring in the kick and snare at the twelve second mark with a little flare. Maybe you spin the make-believe stick in between each beat. Or maybe you keep one hand free for pointing at a pretty person across the room. Whatever you do, just be sure that once 1:22 rolls around you’re ready to unleash hell.

#2 I Can Feel it In the Air by Phil Collins

Mike Tyson.

#1 When the Levee Breaks by Led Zeppelin

Here’s a weird sociological experiment: Go up to someone (preferably a friend but it’s your call) and say “Hey, did you know that a persons eyebrows and pubic hair are the exact same colour?” They’ll immediately look at your eyebrows. Guaranteed. It’s impossible not to, just like trying to not air drum when this song comes on.
