Following a less than stellar DJ set by guitarist Sune Rose Wagner at The Garrison Friday night, expectations for The Raveonettes’ Dundas Square performance were slightly mixed. Not only was their NXNE appearance scheduled to be their largest Toronto show yet, but reviews following their previous dates (specifically their October 22 gig at the Phoenix) were no less than glowing, leaving fans of the Danish twosome to anxiously anticipate an equally memorable set.
Not holding back on the hits, Iggy and the Stooges busted out hit after hit including “Search and Destroy”, “Raw Power”, “Your Pretty Face is Going to Hell” and “I Wanna Be Your Dog”. The band’s sound was electrifying, powerful and the sheer rock reverberated throughout the entire Square and beyond as people around the corner could hear the frantic noise.
Day 4 of NXNE 2010 goes to the Yonge and Dundas Square stage which hosted Surfer Blood, Wavves, the Raveonettes and later in the evening headliner Iggy and the Stooges. Some estimate the crowd at nearly 30,000 people cramming into the awkwardly designed Toronto landmark. Earlier in the day, Barry Taylor caught up with Damian Abraham and The Sheepdogs played a relaxed acoustic set from a tree in Bellwoods Park.
This year’s NXNE filmmaker spotlight falls on the legendary Don Letts. Letts was a London DJ in the mid-70s who spun both punk and reggae, and changed the direction of bands like The Clash. In turn, the DIY ethic of punk inspired Letts to pick up a movie camera. Chances are, any vintage footage of the Sex Pistols and The Clash you see was originally shot by Letts.

Avi Buffalo’s stripped down set was a good match for the Long Beach act that grew from a solo project. The four piece band are starting on long tour in support of their first, self-titled release. Check out our photos after the jump.
NXNE 2010 continues with the Jagermeister Rooftop BBQ Bash, the Hard Rock Cafe, Lee’s Palace and more nighttime Dundas Square action. Ft. Sloan, The Raveonettes, K-OS, Said the Whale, Rah Rah, La Strada and many more.
