The Weekend Music Video Playlist – Viral Edition

As AUX Weekly intern Bram and I were leaving a band interview last night we got to talking about our favourite music videos that either started out intended for viral success or ended up that way because of how unique they were. Here now is the list of the top ten viral music videos (weekend edition), because it’s a Friday. We’ll see you at the Jingle Bell Rock party at the Horseshoe on Saturday right?

10. Pork and Beans – Weezer

Paying homage to the videos that have entertained us during procrastination, Weezer’s “Pork and Beans” is a great place to start the list. Try and see if you can count how many of the videos you’ve seen then think about how over viral videos you are.

9. House of Cards – Radiohead

In Rainbows changed the music industry and Radiohead Live From the Basement was the first thing we put on our channel. Needless to say we have a special place in our hearts for In Rainbows. The album was on every fans iPod before they could buy a physical copy. “House Of Cards” was a great video to accompany the album’s success and interacted with fans on a whole new level. Check out the different versions of the video that fans created using the link on the sidebar.

8. Bad Romance – Lady Gaga

Lady Gaga scares the shit out of me [ed. note me=Bram]. Where did she come from? What’s she trying to prove? No one really understands her persona. Regardless, this video was spread around the web the day it was released more than any other video ever (this hasn’t been proven mathematically but simply based on the amount of IM’s I received). [ed. note: listen closely to the saw-beat way in the background - then go watch this video.]

7. Crank Dat – Soulja Boy

The “Macarena” of the decade. Go ahead. Ask your little brother and his friends to do the dance. Stupid song + stupid dance = Youtube phenomenon…sadly.

6. I’ve Got A Feeling – Black Eyed Peas (on Oprah)

The real video was nothing special. However, whether or not you like the song, this video is a must see. Sure, it’s not a real music video by definition. But it has music. It is a video. Chances are your mom’s seen this before you have. If not, show it to her. Nothing like a little family bonding during the holiday season.

5. D.A.N.C.E – Justice

Would Justice really have achieved the same success had this video not existed? All I know is when I saw this video, I googled where I could get one of the t-shirts. Brilliant marketing.

4. Who’s Gonna Save My Soul – Gnarls Barkley

Jorma Taccone of The Lonely Island (and takers of the number 3 spot) plays the guy whose girlfriend just tore his heart out…literally. This unexpected gory masterpiece may not have millions of views, but the amount of hits should be no judge of its overall greatness.

3. Jizz In My Pants – The Lonely Island

“Lazy Sunday” should be here, but finding it on Youtube was a little difficult (thanks NBC). Nonetheless, it was “Jizz In My Pants” that launched the group’s music career, paving the way for “I’m On A Boat”, the unexpected Grammy-nominated summer smash. The video also has a mind-blowing 72 million views.

2. Single Ladies – Beyonce

Thank you, Kanye. Because of you, Beyonce will always be runner up on everyone’s list. Did she deserve to win the VMA? More importantly, are people still watching them? Publicity stunt or not, “Single Ladies” really was an incredible video that got everyone doing Beyonce’s “moon walk” (see 0:15).

1. A Million Ways – OK GO

Let’s be honest, was there really any another option? This is the video that started it all and brought the band to the mainstream. It even inspired the infamous “treadmill” sequel “Here it Goes Again”. “A Million Ways” brought D.I.Y to a new generation and for many, the first video that linked them to Youtube (other than “grape lady” of course).

Yeah, of course we missed a few – comment here or tweet us with your additions and we’ll send you a sweet AUX t-shirt.
