Ali Baba
Volume 1: House of Baba
(ABO Films)
SOUNDS LIKE: A bad caricature.
Ali Baba Abnormal claims to 'represent' his Middle Eastern roots, but he's about as Arab as A-rab of Soulja Boy fame. When the album isn't composed of mediocre beats it's occupied with stupid skits that sound like they're ripped out of a Jean-Claude Van Damme made-for-TV-with-terrorists. While this is quite obviously supposed to be ironic, it only comes off as a mindless babble of cartoonish (very, very bad) Arab/Russian sounding accents. The absurdity gets taken up a notch when a very American female voice repeatedly says "All Day Sharmutas" (Sharmutas means Hos) and "Yallah Back". Another reviewer, Pedro 'DJ Complejo' Hernandez, got it right when he said these phrases might be, "funny to outsiders poking fun at the hip hop culture, but they come of sounding like the ramblings of a poser." Well Pedro, Ali Baba's lyrical skills might sound like they're saying things in Arabic or cultural nods but they come off sounding like the lingual mistakes of a cultural opportunist.
