Marianas Trench lead the way with 7 MMVA nominations

Last night, Much Music announced the nominees for the 2012 Much Music Video Awards, shining a light on Vancouver angst-pop band Marianas Trench, who logged 7 nominations. Both Hedley and Drake trailed the Trench with 5 nominations, while the Bieber-affiliated Carly Rae Jepsen and douche-rockers Down With Webster nabbed 4 nominations each. Justin Bieber scored a pair of nominations for his “Boyfriend” video, and Toronto Polaris-core rockers Fucked Up even earned a nomination for MuchLOUD Rock Video Of The Year.

This week on idol it was down to 5. I honestly can’t remember that many contestants prior to the final 10 or 12, and I suppose that’s the point. The opening pre-credits segment of every Thursday episode now grows incrementally more saccharine and dramatic, as if all the contestants have terminal diseases or something.

Don’t let Chris Martin’s exciting-looking stage leap fool you. Aside from some of the early jams on Parachutes, and one other incredible song, Coldplay are the posterboys of bland, boring, palatable Brit rock. They’re not bad — in fact, they’re quite good at what they do. It’s just that Coldplay is the most inoffensive popular rock band on the planet. Let’s face it; they’ve never chased that China white through the black tar desert. They’ve never paid a prostitute to stick a yam up her butt. They’re probably all really polite to each other. They probably sit around drinking tea, and talk about their favourite charities. Pshhh.

The big winners included ginger crooner Ed Sheeran, British/Irish (good to see them getting along!) boyband One Direction, and the queen of flipping the bird, Adele herself.
