The two bands featured in this episode are two great artists on very different ends of the music spectrum. On one hand we have an experimental pop band and on the other a singer-songwriter. The two help create a sort of international episode for us with Said the Shark hailing from Denmark and Andrew Cole from England.
Said the Shark was in town for Canadian Music Week and were nice enough to let us film them in-between sleeping and performances. They played a lot of shows in the short time they were in the country and we were flattered to grab a bit of their time.
We agreed to play in their hotel room, showing a little bit of what it’s like to see a band on the road – jamming and having fun while not on stage. Admittedly, this room was a little nicer than some of the places you see on tours, but this is TV after all. Said The Shark was the first band to literally bring all their bells and whistles. The floor of their hotel room was littered with horns, shakers, toys, and there was even a shark shaped balloon floating around. It all fit perfectly with their music, leaving us unsure what fantastic sound or melody was going to come next.
On the other half of the episode we had Andrew Cole. Andrew decided to play at the historic Berkeley Theatre. The building had so many rooms we could barely decide to where to shoot. Each room seemed to present us with greater and greater backdrops.
Andrew played an acoustic set for us, which seemed to match the odd twists and turns of the building, the sound reverberating through the openness of the rooms and hallways. Stripping down his sound showed us that you don’t need a lot of instrumentation for a melody to stick in your head.
Andrew is mixing his new album which we’re sure will be a great success and Said the Shark is currently touring their new album, which was released in March. Everyone had a great time working on these two shoots and we hope that shows in the episode.
Thanks to the bands and the crew for another great episode.
