00:00:10:28 -How is it going guys? -Pretty good Jerry.
00:00:13:00 -No it's Barry. -Sorry Terry.
00:00:15:29 No, no it's Barry Taylor.
00:00:17:27 Okay, let me get it right you are Fairy Gaylurd. Is that?
00:00:22:03 Last time, Bary Taylor.
00:00:27:00 Oh now he is Scary Taylor.
00:00:29:20 Okay ...this.
00:00:31:15 Okay so that's...
00:00:32:29 Yeah. That was a lot of fun,
00:00:35:13 Jon Dore is hilarious that goes very funny,
00:00:38:01 and Ben and I were just randomly were friends in high school
00:00:42:01 and then went out separate way and then
00:00:45:10 ended up crossing paths again through
00:00:46:21 music stuff and he asked me to come do that
00:00:48:28 and it was fun, Jon Dore is a really funny guy.
00:00:52:25 And so now he is giving away their stuff for free.
00:00:55:00 Yeah they are doing quite well,
00:00:56:08 I think they are in Europe actually right now as we speak.
00:00:58:19 So they are doing great and having fun doing it I think.
00:01:03:28 Got to get him back on the show. He is always good.
00:01:05:26 -Good guy for sure. -Very much of contrarian.
00:01:07:26 It's good, good television.
00:01:09:10 Alright we need to talk about copyright law here,
00:01:12:10 has anybody ever gone to a website called savethelevy.ca.
00:01:17:06 Do you know what I am talking about?
00:01:18:23 Yes. Sike is a good trainer
00:01:19:28 Do you want me to explain it
00:01:21:06 or you want me to go ahead?
00:01:22:06 No. you go ahead, you are much smarter than I am.
00:01:25:02 We will see since 1997, the copy record has collected a levy
00:01:31:06 on all recordable media, so all cassettes, all blank CDs
00:01:35:07 and over the last 10 years they have collected 12 years
00:01:39:22 they have collected a $150 million
00:01:41:02 what they say they have distributed to 97,000
00:01:42:28 rights holders across the country.
00:01:45:12 Nobody makes mistakes on cassette anymore.
00:01:47:23 What's the last time you burned a music CD.
00:01:52:10 It's been on my playlist now right.
00:01:53:24 -Yeah. -Right, it's a playlist,
00:01:55:19 you download into your portable music player,
00:01:58:09 your iPod whatever it is and then you are on your way.
00:02:00:27 Obviously this means,
00:02:02:18 the levy people are having a cash crisis,
00:02:05:15 people aren't buying cassettes;
00:02:07:11 people aren't buying CDRs anymore,
00:02:08:13 so they want to find new and innovative things to tax.
00:02:11:22 One of things that they are pushing for with
00:02:13:28 savethelevy.ca
00:02:15:02 is a tax on portable music players.
00:02:20:04 Please people follow this story.
00:02:23:02 Do you know how much they want to tax
00:02:24:12 our portable music players?
00:02:26:03 A lot, I just saw one proposal
00:02:28:26 that the largest iPod would have a $75 tax on it.
00:02:32:20 Well it would be collected by the...
00:02:36:22 whatever the collective is,
00:02:38:03 and then distributed to artists
00:02:40:14 as compensation for copying their music for personal use.
00:02:45:28 The courts have said that these personal use copies
00:02:50:27 have value and that consumer should pay for this value,
00:02:55:18 this is the argument.
00:02:56:26 So if you have an iPod let's say,
00:02:59:11 you would get the thing for 75 bucks the levy,
00:03:03:28 and if you were to hit the iTunes button on your iPod
00:03:08:00 of course you would pay your 99 cents or $1.29 for the song.
00:03:11:13 That would be sucked right into your iPod
00:03:13:09 which means you would make a copy.
00:03:14:28 You would be buying the original
00:03:17:06 or for all intensive purpose the original to you
00:03:18:20 and you end up paying for it twice,
00:03:20:05 once in the levy, once in the price of the song.
00:03:22:08 End of the day what's the point-like honestly,
00:03:25:21 this is ridiculous.
00:03:26:21 It doesn't end, because it's middle men,
00:03:29:04 it's all middle men that are scrambling right now
00:03:31:19 because artists are finding a way to connect directly
00:03:35:01 with their fans and these middle men going oh crap,
00:03:39:08 I am useless now and I am not going to make money
00:03:41:26 and get to hang out with these cool people
00:03:43:10 despite the fact I have no talent.
00:03:45:19 Like that's what a lot of there are a lot of really,
00:03:49:06 really great people working in the record industry,
00:03:51:06 don't get me wrong. They are genuine.
00:03:52:18 Seven.
00:03:53:21 Well I had eight last count but, we will go with your seven.
00:03:58:01 No there are some genuinely great music people
00:04:01:18 working in the industry
00:04:02:22 however there are also a lot of just losers.
00:04:06:17 These people say that this is money that artist need
00:04:12:00 otherwise they couldn't possibly survive.
00:04:14:24 I did the math on this okay.
00:04:18:04 $150 million collected over 10 years.
00:04:20:29 Okay, let's take them at their work.
00:04:23:07 $22 million of that went to administration, lobbyists,
00:04:28:16 auditors and lawyers okay.
00:04:31:03 So let's say that there are $125 million
00:04:34:04 that have been collected over 10 years
00:04:36:03 to be distributed to 97,000 rights holders.
00:04:39:00 Divide a $128 million by 97,000
00:04:43:08 and what you end up with is an average annual payment
00:04:47:12 to each of those 97000 people of 100 and 30 some dollars,
00:04:51:04 and they say, that many of these artists could not survive
00:04:54:27 had we not been for this levy.
00:04:56:17 -Great. -If it wasn't for the levy,
00:04:59:23 they would be what more broke than they already are,
00:05:02:15 like it's ridiculous, and what really freaks me out
00:05:04:09 there Allan is that here we are talking about it
00:05:07:08 and making complete sense about it I think I hope,
00:05:10:01 but it seems like it's just lost in the wind,
00:05:13:08 people don't seem to burry this, this is
00:05:16:09 Have any of you talked to an artist about this?
00:05:18:06 No. I have only seen the website
00:05:19:15 and I have only read the testimonials on the website.
00:05:21:09 Have a look at it, and we could do a whole half hour on this,
00:05:26:05 I find this quite interesting,
00:05:28:13 because I don't know but I would be very curious
00:05:31:07 to see what an artist would have to say.
00:05:33:05 Okay, go to savethelevy.ca
00:05:35:23 and we will come back and we will talk about it.
00:05:36:28 -Okay. -Okay.
00:05:37:28 We got to be back in a second,
00:05:39:08 we will back in a second to get our music recommendations.
