00:00:14:03 Look at this man,
00:00:16:18 this is something bad ass right here.
00:00:20:27 Music is the same everywhere
00:00:23:01 and people who love music are the same everywhere.
00:00:24:28 It's universal.
00:00:26:05 It's universal. If it's good music,
00:00:27:20 they get off on it, and we like to think we play good metal.
00:00:31:15 [Music]
00:00:35:26 [Non English]
00:00:38:18 Sorry about that,
00:00:40:24 we got a little taste of the French connection going on.
00:00:43:24 [Music]
00:00:51:20 We are not really defined by a style,
00:00:53:12 we just like play what comes to us,
00:00:55:13 and I think that's what any band should do.
00:00:57:23 You play what hits you in the heart,
00:01:00:03 and that's all there is to it.
00:01:02:28 [Music]
00:01:12:12 [Music]
00:01:28:03 We are Devildriver
00:01:30:07 and we are in Canada today,
00:01:32:15 playing a show on the Thrash & Burn tour
00:01:34:10 with a bunch of killer heavy bands.
00:01:37:06 [Music]
00:01:59:03 It's a cool thing. I mean, I was young
00:02:00:28 and I went to gigs, so you can come to a gig at age 13 or 14
00:02:03:28 and see ten bands like this and hang out all day.
00:02:08:08 Come drop your kids off, it's a great place.
00:02:12:28 [Music]
00:02:28:13 Devildriver is on the road a lot,
00:02:30:09 because we love the road, but what it does for a band is,
00:02:33:08 keeps breaking open different markets.
00:02:35:25 We just played at a place two nights ago
00:02:38:18 that we hadn't been in four years.
00:02:40:28 So I think it's really important for us
00:02:41:28 to keep coming back to different markets
00:02:44:02 and keep hitting different areas.
00:02:46:08 I don't think there is a band out there that tours
00:02:49:13 as much or as hard as we do, with as less time off as we do,
00:02:52:29 I don't think there is one out there.
00:02:55:06 [Music]
00:03:15:18 You have got to work hard if you want things to come to fruition.
00:03:19:21 You have got to stay on the road.
00:03:21:03 In this day and age we are downloading and everything else,
00:03:23:18 the only way to survive is to be on the road,
00:03:25:08 to get your music out there.
00:03:27:04 So I have always been that. I was raised with that ethic.
00:03:29:21 Everybody else in the band has that in them,
00:03:32:08 one way or the other,
00:03:34:13 so we stick to that with ourselves and work hard.
00:03:39:22 [Music]
00:03:58:18 I don't know, this record was a lot of fun, because
00:04:00:18 we really kind of learned how to work with each other.
00:04:02:08 If I write a riff, I can automatically know
00:04:04:21 if the rest of the band is going to like it or not,
00:04:07:10 as opposed to three or four years ago.
00:04:10:28 What people need to understand about Devildriver is we were
00:04:13:28 only together about six months before we made our first record,
00:04:16:28 and that was predominantly written by one guy.
00:04:19:03 So by the time we were two years in
00:04:20:28 and got into the second record, everybody started writing.
00:04:24:09 It was a big learning process for us.
00:04:25:25 Yeah. So by the time we got our fourth record,
00:04:27:16 like right now, we have only been together six years,
00:04:29:13 that's about how much time you usually have as a band
00:04:32:01 before you get your first record deal.
00:04:33:28 So we are on this process right now of finding a sound
00:04:36:03 that's really defining.
00:04:38:06 Like me personally, Mike does write a lot of melodic stuff,
00:04:41:01 and I am just learning really how to write to his stuff;
00:04:43:28 the last record and this record.
00:04:46:06 So I think what he said about everybody kind of
00:04:47:28 jelling right now on this record and having a good time
00:04:51:04 and kind of creating it organically would be the answer.
00:04:55:14 [Music]
00:05:18:18 I don't think we are a nihilistic,
00:05:20:06 glass half empty kind of band,
00:05:21:28 we are definitely a determination perseverance band.
00:05:24:22 I mean, lyrically, definitely.
00:05:27:00 I think it has given something special
00:05:30:10 to people who aren't getting it.
00:05:32:00 Right now everybody is all doom filled,
00:05:33:28 and hate this, hate that,
00:05:36:17 it's like, I don't have time for any of that,
00:05:38:12 so lyrically I don't write about those things.
00:05:40:14 [Music]
00:06:02:23 There are a few places we haven't been and going to
00:06:05:00 a few places we haven't been for a while, like Sweden.
00:06:07:23 My first show with Devildriver was in Sweden,
00:06:09:24 we haven't been back there since 2004,
00:06:11:26 so I am looking forward to going back there.
00:06:14:21 It's going to be cool.
00:06:16:02 It's the same thing what he said,
00:06:17:16 it's about breaking markets,
00:06:18:23 you have got to keep breaking markets and going.
00:06:20:12 Somebody reminded me,
00:06:21:25 like we have never done a proper Canadian run,
00:06:23:29 where we are up here for two weeks.
00:06:25:22 So in April and May of next year, we are booking it.
00:06:28:13 If there is somewhere we haven't been, we are going to go
00:06:31:01 and then we are going to keep returning.
00:06:32:24 [Music]
00:06:44:03 Music is the same everywhere
00:06:45:28 and people who love music are the same everywhere.
00:06:48:03 It's universal.
00:06:49:08 It's universal. If it's good music,
00:06:50:24 they get off on it, and we like to think we play good metal.
00:06:54:09 So people are coming to it in droves right now. It's good.
00:06:57:08 The album debuted higher over here in Canada
00:06:59:18 than any of our past have, and higher in the States.
00:07:04:03 In a time when downloading is taking over
00:07:06:26 and the record sales are going down year after year,
00:07:09:09 it's good to see that happening for a band like us,
00:07:12:03 especially because we put in so much work.
00:07:14:10 [Music]
00:00:00:14 [Music]
00:00:40:28 The high points are the turnouts.
00:00:42:28 This tour is pretty awesome.
00:00:45:11 A lot of kids show up every night,
00:00:48:01 a lot of good times, good bands.
00:00:50:20 Low points would be the big gaps in between cities
00:00:55:15 and the 11 a.m. load ins,
00:00:58:05 so we have been doing a lot of night drives,
00:01:00:20 not a lot of showering going on.
00:01:06:22 Got to pay the price to be on stage, I guess,
00:01:09:14 but it's all worth it seriously,
00:01:11:17 this tour is a pretty bad ass.
00:01:14:18 [Music]
00:01:33:13 Playing all ages shows is good for us because
00:01:37:04 our audience is pretty young.
00:01:39:25 It gives them the opportunity to come to the show
00:01:42:22 and enjoy our music.
00:01:44:24 I mean not just that, I just look back,
00:01:47:29 when I was a kid,
00:01:50:08 let's say, I don't know,
00:01:51:08 Suffocation was in town playing,
00:01:53:29 18 plus venues, I will be like, oh man!
00:01:59:08 sometimes I couldn't go and see like my favorite bands.
00:02:02:10 So I think it's definitely something,
00:02:05:01 that we always make it a point,
00:02:06:08 like every time we get to call the shots we are like,
00:02:08:09 we want to make sure like, as many of the shows,
00:02:11:07 if not all the shows, have to be all age.
00:02:13:12 [Music]
00:02:29:21 We just finished recording our new album.
00:02:31:21 -It's going to come -Fourth record.
00:02:33:02 Yeah, fourth record already man,
00:02:35:25 it's just pure sheer Despised Icon brutality.
00:02:39:23 If people think, with time, and by getting old,
00:02:43:20 we would be like softer or anything,
00:02:45:18 they got it wrong because so far I think
00:02:49:05 it's one of our most brutal albums.
00:02:51:28 Two songs are like 230 bpms on that.
00:02:55:17 Put it this way, we are definitely not selling out.
00:02:57:28 [Music]
00:03:14:20 This was our first time riding on the road,
00:03:16:06 we didn't have as much time
00:03:17:17 as we did for previous records
00:03:19:27 to actually write the whole thing,
00:03:21:16 because we have been touring so much,
00:03:23:06 so a couple of weeks or couple of days we have had.
00:03:25:11 Home in between tours,
00:03:27:08 we would rather do something else and just
00:03:29:20 band 24/7.
00:03:32:09 [Foreign Language]
00:03:37:10 Sorry about that.
00:03:39:10 Our merch guy is tripping,
00:03:40:07 because he can't find a van anymore.
00:03:41:24 Parking sucks around here, I hate it.
00:03:45:02 But you got a little taste of the French connection going on.
00:03:50:01 [Music]
00:04:03:07 I forgot what we were saying.
00:04:04:06 About the new album.
00:04:05:20 Oh, it's got two songs in French, speaking of which,
00:04:09:13 first record, half of it was in French,
00:04:12:04 and then English being the universal language,
00:04:15:17 we figured, alright, let's try
00:04:17:05 and get our name out there,
00:04:18:14 so we focused on that for Healing Process,
00:04:21:07 and The Ills Of Modern Man.
00:04:22:20 Now that, I guess, we are a bit more established,
00:04:24:13 we really wanted to do something
00:04:25:27 that we felt strongly about,
00:04:28:04 so there you have it.
00:04:29:23 [Music]
00:04:45:14 If I talk about my city, Montreal, its very diverse.
00:04:51:08 You can't really put a label on any kind of metal
00:04:53:22 that's coming out of there.
00:04:54:29 You got bands like us,
00:04:56:03 that will blend like different types of metal.
00:04:59:08 You got straight black metal bands, you got hardcore bands,
00:05:02:28 you got death metal bands.
00:05:05:06 I think there is plenty of bands and talent in Montreal.
00:05:10:28 I mean, we just couldn't figure out what we wanted to do,
00:05:14:13 so we just mixed it all up, and here we are.
00:05:18:11 [Music]
00:00:00:14 [Music]
00:00:34:20 We have have played under a tent in a lightning storm,
00:00:36:24 that was probably like the worst site experience.
00:00:39:03 So we figured if we can play through
00:00:41:03 a lightning storm under a tent,
00:00:43:18 we could probably in the day light at [inaudible] Festival.
00:00:46:13 [Music]
00:00:56:03 It's a little weird because it's daytime,
00:00:57:22 and usually when you see kids like moving around and stuff,
00:01:00:28 it's in like a club, it's dark, and all compressed or whatever,
00:01:04:22 but it should still work out pretty good.
00:01:07:08 [Music]
00:01:25:28 The hardcore scene, just kind of going on well,
00:01:29:07 and basically as soon as that happened,
00:01:31:21 people started listening to it a lot more.
00:01:34:16 All the old bands that played punk rock and what not,
00:01:37:28 they just kind of disappeared.
00:01:40:10 When the scene started off a long time ago,
00:01:41:28 we had a lot of bands, like In These Walls are playing today,
00:01:45:08 [inaudible] Union,
00:01:46:21 A Day And A Deathwish.
00:01:48:19 There are a lot of other bands that,
00:01:50:17 they kind of started in a different like genre
00:01:53:28 and then they like progressed into it.
00:01:55:28 In These Walls has always been like that,
00:01:57:24 but Dead Only Better, turned into Attack in Black.
00:02:01:18 I don't know, welling just kind of attracts that style I guess.
00:02:05:10 [Music]
00:02:17:10 There are so many different types of metal,
00:02:19:05 and everyone is playing all of their own different stuff.
00:02:22:24 That's pretty much what we did, like we play metal, hardcore,
00:02:24:28 whatever you call it, but we are not really defined by a style,
00:02:28:20 we just like play what comes to us,
00:02:30:28 and I think that's what any band should do.
00:02:33:16 You play what hits you in the heart,
00:02:35:17 and that's all there is to it.
00:02:38:18 [Music]
00:02:53:18 I have been in other bands,
00:02:55:02 and he has been in another band with me.
00:02:56:29 They have been in all of their own separate bands,
00:02:59:25 and we are all kind of friends that just binded together
00:03:03:03 and decided like it was time to just try and make it.
00:03:06:19 But that's how it's always been.
00:03:08:18 We are all used to doing it ourself.
00:03:10:21 We are all used to losing a lot of money,
00:03:14:03 like driving and everything,
00:03:16:08 like you don't get paid a lot when you are doing it yourself.
00:03:20:20 So we just do whatever we can and hope for the best.
