00:00:31:17 Hi I am Laurence Currie
00:00:32:29 And I am Moe berg. Welcome to Master Tracks.
00:00:34:23 Today in the studio we've got the rock band Drive Faster.
00:00:37:25 They're going to do the song Analog
00:00:40:00 and we're here at Metal Works.
00:00:42:15 We've got one day to do it so let us get them in here.
00:00:52:19 We were Supernal for about 7 years
00:00:55:11 and we decided to change the name
00:00:57:02 and have a new sound
00:00:58:11 and it is a name that people can
00:00:59:28 pronounce better than our last name
00:01:01:28 and that is our new band
00:01:03:22 so we are pretty fresh as far as that goes.
00:01:05:28 Like the new band is like new name
00:01:07:07 this is kind of like the first thing
00:01:08:15 we've been doing since the new year.
00:01:10:23 This singer is great. Really good singer!
00:01:16:07 And it is a good vocal track.
00:01:23:23 So we'll kind of create some dynamics in this verse.
00:01:26:16 Verse maybe will not be quite as busy.
00:01:28:22 We'll move that stuff into a second verse and...
00:01:30:11 Are you keeping all the off beats and stuff
00:01:34:24 with the hats and the verse or is it pretty straightened out?
00:01:38:18 Well, it was kind of like to be
00:01:40:13 let him do at least one little fun thing in the song.
00:01:44:11 No!
00:01:45:20 Because the rest of it, I think that beat is going to be really
00:01:48:03 straightened out in this. -Great!
00:01:50:01 So that it rocks a little harder!
00:01:51:18 Yeah!
00:01:53:08 We're doing a song called Analog.
00:01:55:07 That one was written was a co-write... probably we wrote it
00:02:00:06 within the last six months or so.
00:02:02:14 We re-wrote it a couple of times like
00:02:04:29 the chorus has been re-written like I think twice.
00:02:07:22 The song actually came together with a guitar-line I wrote.
00:02:11:24 It was probably like 3 years ago
00:02:13:08 and we just kind of hung on to it.
00:02:15:06 It was the original...
00:02:16:17 [Guitar playing]
00:02:24:13 -Morning! -Morning!
00:02:27:25 The song is kind of about... like if you go into the lyrics
00:02:30:04 it is kind of about being in a big city
00:02:34:03 and being overwhelmed and kind of being like,
00:02:38:02 how do I fit into this big city you know I am still Analog.
00:02:40:28 It is like everybody is like ahead of me, you know.
00:02:43:18 And that is kind of what the song is about.
00:02:45:12 So that is the song we're doing.
00:02:46:28 So we're really excited to have you guys on today.
00:02:49:00 It is going to be great!
00:02:50:08 So yeah we're just kind of like straighten it out a bit,
00:02:52:07 I think the song is pretty together already.
00:02:54:12 So we'll just straighten it out a bit like we're going to get a
00:02:57:09 little bit more of a straight ahead beat and just kind of do a
00:03:01:07 couple of things and create some dynamics...
00:03:02:18 because a lot of excitement off the top of the song,
00:03:04:06 so we want to keep that excitement
00:03:05:13 going through the whole song.
00:03:07:00 So it should be pretty good, pretty easy.
00:03:10:08 Yeah you guys rock!
00:03:11:10 As long as you guys are awesome, we'll be awesome.
00:03:13:26 Make the arrangement a bit, it'll all be good!
00:03:15:22 Let us get in there.
00:03:17:01 [Music]
00:03:33:25 So Lawrence is in the live room now,
00:03:36:18 setting up with the band and getting them organized.
00:03:38:08 I think today, this song is pretty simple.
00:03:40:28 They're a young band so we're kind of trying to keep things
00:03:42:28 as simple as possible.
00:03:43:29 I think that'll be the challenge today
00:03:44:29 is to make sure that the band is giving their chance
00:03:48:00 to succeed today.
00:03:49:05 So we'll keep things simple, simplify the arrangement,
00:03:51:27 simplify everyone's parts
00:03:53:17 and I think we should probably do something really well.
00:03:55:13 It is a really good song
00:03:56:28 so I think it should go really well today.
00:04:01:03 Okay how are we doing guys?
00:04:02:17 -Good to go, I think! -Mike you ready to go?
00:04:05:13 [Music]
00:04:16:28 We've been working on a record actually the past year.
00:04:19:13 We've been writing and
00:04:20:14 we've been in a couple of different studios
00:04:22:16 and grappling with what is our sound
00:04:24:20 and that kind of thing.
00:04:25:20 And that is where the name change kind of came from too
00:04:28:06 let us narrow down our sound so it is not like,
00:04:31:18 we sound like this band and this band and this band.

00:00:04:19 We've worked with a few producers in the past,
00:00:06:05 the biggest thing that you want to look for...
00:00:09:06 the obvious thing is just like...
00:00:10:16 they're kind of like the fifth member in the band,
00:00:12:11 if you have four member or whatever, right.
00:00:14:04 So, you have to get along, that is the most important thing.
00:00:17:06 You want to respect their space
00:00:20:26 and they respect yours but also...
00:00:22:13 you know when you are working in a collaboration
00:00:24:21 it is really important to get along on a personal level
00:00:28:05 but after that you want to dig their style.
00:00:31:08 So ya I am...
00:00:32:26 in that verse, I mean in the pre-chorus, I am not sure...
00:00:36:10 like in every once in a while you all kind of go,
00:00:37:19 you just do a one because I think

00:00:59:20 and listening to them and he mentioned certain changes
00:01:02:05 or certain things I missed while we were recording.

00:01:18:12 fu-fighteresque, funky, rock 'n roll loud song.
00:01:23:07 Basically it is just three minutes of blare rock loud.
00:01:27:09 Specifically this song was very interesting actually that
00:01:29:29 Moe chose this song, when he picked this one really, Oh Cool!
00:01:32:19 because now it is like someone you know,
00:01:35:14 with the history and respect, you know what we want,
00:01:37:22 to hear what he has to say because
00:01:40:14 it is funny out of all the songs this was the one
00:01:42:11 we're like we don't fuck a damn.
00:01:44:08 As like we don't know anyone about the parts
00:01:46:08 and also he just came
00:01:48:01 and it was the easiest pre-production session ever.
00:01:50:19 He just came and he heard all the parts and he was like...
00:01:55:05 we were like... it was like all... it was all good.
00:01:58:00 So another thing is I feel like going in from
00:02:00:28 the pre-chorus into the chorus.
00:02:02:19 So I don't know if it is like...
00:02:04:04 not nothing really busy but just something to signal
00:02:06:17 that we're going into the chorus.
00:02:08:04 Do you want to just...

00:02:28:13 Yeah! Yeah! It is good! It is good!
00:02:30:07 Alright, we got this.
00:02:33:02 And it was funny because
00:02:34:20 he kind of brought it back to what it was originally
00:02:37:23 because I think with us trying to rearrange it too much...
00:02:40:19 any band, well any guy,
00:02:42:11 any person, girl, guy, girl, dog, cat
00:02:45:05 who is in a band will know that if you over produce

00:02:49:27 Okay so we just finished up with Mike on the drums.
00:02:53:13 He did really well, we just got to edit a few pieces together,
00:02:57:07 fix up little fill here or there
00:03:01:18 and once that is all done we'll move on to the bass.
00:03:06:05 [Music]

00:03:45:22 [Music]
00:03:57:00 For this song the bass line is incredibly simple like...
00:04:00:06 and that is just the way the song is.
00:04:02:05 It is what the song needs it just needs a steady renotes.
00:04:07:02 Pretty much about the whole thing
00:04:08:16 and the funny thing about song is
00:04:10:11 we rarely actually play the first beat of a bar

00:05:56:14 Yeah! One of the most outstanding vocal performances
00:05:58:07 we've had the history of Master Tracks.
00:06:00:02 Yeah! Wayne is just putting together the final copy of it
00:06:03:11 which shouldn't take long at all.
00:06:05:01 And it is going to be great.
00:06:06:25 And then Lawrence is going to mix.
00:06:08:22 Exactly!
00:06:10:13 [Music]

00:00:00:14 [Music]
00:00:04:15 Moe and Lawrence are great to work with!
00:00:06:09 They've been like amazing, I wish we could just like
00:00:08:25 record for the next month.
00:00:10:01 So if you guys are listening No I am just kidding.
00:00:13:06 But it was really-really fun.
00:00:14:29 The process was really clean simple
00:00:18:14 and the changes I am really happy with
00:00:20:19 and like Yay! for Dry Faster. Yay!
00:00:27:08 Alright so now we're mixing,
00:00:29:14 where have mixed the tune Analog and
00:00:31:28 it is pretty straight ahead modern rock tune.
00:00:36:02 It is got a lot of guitars on it and loud bass and drums.
00:00:40:11 So let us take a listen.
00:00:42:28 [Music]
00:00:46:18 Got a riff right off the top!
00:00:48:16 [Music]
00:00:51:17 Drums come in!
00:00:53:28 And then bang!
00:00:55:18 [Music]
00:01:01:01 And that is several electric guitars, bass mostly the amp
00:01:09:28 and the vocals are in.
00:01:11:25 [Music]
00:01:16:18 Now we have a little riff here. Did you put this riff in?
00:01:19:29 -When you worked with the band? -This was there!
00:01:21:08 This was there originally?
00:01:22:22 I mean the real magic with this song is the vocal.
00:01:24:26 I mean the vocalist is just so outstanding.
00:01:27:15 The singer, Angela, is just great.
00:01:29:02 It is like you almost get a rush when
00:01:30:29 when you're recording somebody like that.
00:01:32:19 I don't know how you feel but it is like...
00:01:33:29 you know with live recording, it is like hard work,
00:01:35:23 you're trying to encourage the people who're playing to like,
00:01:39:00 you know, be at the top of their game.
00:01:40:08 It is not like play it.
00:01:41:11 it is like play it as good as you've ever played it.
00:01:43:06 Well yeah and almost any take she sang we could've used.
00:01:46:25 Yeah, yeah and so that when you get some of that comes in
00:01:48:11 and she is like so great
00:01:49:16 it is almost like a rush,
00:01:51:04 it is almost like having a drink or something.
00:01:52:26 You just get this feeling of well-being all over your cyclone
00:01:55:28 listening to someone who is really-really great,
00:01:57:29 doing something really great.
00:01:59:03 It is more like you are listening to
00:02:00:26 -the best stereo ever. -Yeah exactly!
00:02:03:02 That is a good analogy.
00:02:04:14 Well they... usually what you're doing
00:02:07:08 when you're playing live is either
00:02:09:18 you're playing the entire song in one sound
00:02:11:10 or your stepping on pedal here and there and that is just
00:02:13:28 that is not you can really do in a recording situation.
00:02:16:09 So we had to sort of like break things into chunks and say
00:02:19:02 okay what is the sound they're going to work for this
00:02:21:00 and so for each sort of part of the song Lawrence
00:02:23:08 would come up with a different guitar sound and so.
00:02:26:00 But altogether it really sounds great.
00:02:27:24 It does sort of sound like a guy is just kind of stepping on
00:02:29:27 pedals and Angela is kind of stepping on...
00:02:31:15 But that is what took time too.
00:02:33:01 It took a little while to fine-tune all the sounds,
00:02:35:01 they'd actually work with one another and yeah...
00:02:38:26 That was a big job with this one!
00:02:41:02 [Music]
00:02:44:17 Guitar is solo sort of!
00:02:46:20 [Music]
00:02:49:19 The guitar solo was kind of a tricky thing to try and get.
00:02:52:00 The guitar player was playing something really
00:02:53:29 bluesy kind of guitar so it didn't really
00:02:56:10 it didn't really sound like it'd fit in the song.
00:02:58:19 It wasn't really modern rock sounding.
00:02:59:27 Guitar solo so such a tricky thing now
00:03:02:25 so I was kind of trying to get him into play
00:03:04:27 something that sounded a little more modern.
00:03:06:23 In the context of the song maybe...
00:03:08:19 -A little more riffy than... -Yeah!
00:03:10:08 Little more like Fu-fighteresque like you know I don't know,
00:03:13:11 like zapping or something.
00:03:14:26 Yeah I mean... I think this sort of illustrates the
00:03:17:22 magic of the studio because it is like,
00:03:19:26 we listen to a song, it just sounds
00:03:21:23 like they just jammed it out in that live room.
00:03:23:16 But it really was kind of pain-staking process to get.
00:03:26:05 And again it wasn't the playing or the singing,
00:03:28:10 everybody performed really-really well
00:03:30:06 but it is just like, we really sort of had to
00:03:31:28 sort of meticulously get all these parts together
00:03:34:19 to make it sound like this.
00:03:36:12 Well, it is also the part of the genre too.
00:03:38:01 It is like, it is got to feel energetic
00:03:40:17 and live but at the same time
00:03:42:08 it has to have a certain amount of polish to it.
00:03:44:08 So, you know, you don't want to be hearing mistakes
00:03:47:03 all over it or anything.
00:03:48:08 You want it to be a great performance
00:03:50:09 that the band is happy with.
00:03:51:26 I think we got it.
00:03:53:16 Yeah! Yeah! this track sounds great a lot!
00:03:55:17 Fantastic
