00:00:51:08 They put out an Mace and EPA, fantastic four lines called
00:00:54:03 walking papers on underground operations
00:00:56:17 and amazing seven inch called White Jesus on black pine.
00:00:59:02 And they love to work hard and play hard.

00:02:03:21 Ok cool.
00:02:05:01 These are coffee flavored energy drink.
00:02:08:14 What do you think is the most ghost appropriate pornography?
00:02:10:20 That's called like stories and jig, right?
00:02:14:17 Oh, that one is...
00:02:16:21 Heavy metal.
00:02:18:03 Its black day, it's got to be good.
00:02:20:06 Well, you know what, we'll get them both!
00:02:25:08 Can I look for a snack now instead of filming?
00:02:28:13 Man put this on the desk.
00:02:35:08 That's the first time in my life that that's ever happened.
00:02:37:04 I shouldn't have let you do it but I wanted to feel cool.
00:02:39:08 You looked awesome doing it.
00:02:41:18 Can I please get a pack of cigarettes?
00:02:45:23 Oh yes! You got the crunchy coated peanuts.
00:02:57:28 No, it's just being fucking painted.
00:02:59:17 Titanic is more pornography than this.
00:03:01:28 So far Heavy Metal is a burst.
00:03:04:17 Throw it out of the...
00:03:09:18 Right on!

00:04:20:10 Yeah, the first time we saw it we cried and we laughed.

00:04:25:11 You see like the white light and then you see the red tail light.
00:04:28:20 It's creepy.

00:05:35:28 I feel bad that you have testicular cancer but I doubt
00:05:38:26 that I'll blame putting it on Ghost Road rock.
00:05:42:14 I think that story would actually overshadow
00:05:44:10 the motorcycle story?
00:05:47:18 I recorded the whole album of this pic
00:05:48:20 and I am going to leave it on Ghost rock.
00:05:51:00 I am going to leave my car keys.

00:06:21:13 Alright!
00:06:22:20 I think I am going to take my business card back.
00:06:24:23 I am going to get that, Christine is going to be so mad
00:06:26:00 if I leave that M&M's card.
00:06:28:16 I want to leave the card but I don't want like,
00:06:31:08 some kid calling me.
00:06:32:18 Well whenever it is, the fucking punk kid is going to be like,
00:06:36:29 is your refrigerator running because
00:06:39:06 this is the ghost calling.
00:06:42:02 What do you hear when the phone calls you in the ring.
00:06:46:08 Oh it's like...
00:06:49:28 The thing that makes most horror movies scary is that there is
00:06:52:13 like this sense of mythology to like ancient artifacts and stuff
00:06:56:03 but when it's like VHS,
00:06:58:07 it's the thing that like Hanson kills you.
00:07:00:09 We're haunted beta max state!
00:07:03:08 Like imagine it was a laser disk in the ring,

00:00:02:17 Welcome back to Talk Show Night.
00:00:04:13 Our guest today is Spookey Ruben.
00:00:06:20 Now, we, you, all of us, kind of first started noticing him
00:00:10:20 in the nineties when he released Modes of Transportation
00:00:12:14 Volume 1 that came out of the stable of MuchMusic on MTV.
00:00:15:13 And then over the last decade, he has continued to release
00:00:18:00 awesome solo records and has started producing really
00:00:21:15 strange videos that air on this channel, Aux and on Exclaim! TV,
00:00:25:05 as Spookey Ruben's Dizzy Playground.
00:00:27:25 It's nuts and it's awesome.
00:00:29:20 And he just released his latest solo record, Mechanical Royalty.
00:00:32:28 And it is nuts and awesome.
00:00:34:12 So Spookey Ruben.
00:00:36:18 [Music]
00:00:43:18 How is it going sir?
00:00:48:23 Alright!
00:00:49:28 I like your sunglasses.
00:00:51:08 Oh, thank you!
00:00:52:13 Yeah, I was wondering if I should keep them on.
00:00:54:11 Maybe I'll take them off.
00:00:55:19 They look good, maybe we'll do both, whatever.
00:00:57:23 We'll do the interview twice, both ways.
00:00:59:19 And then we're going to inter-cut.
00:01:02:04 Yeah, so we mentioned when you were coming on about what
00:01:05:29 you've been doing with Spookey Ruben's Dizzy Playground
00:01:09:03 which is totally off the fucking wall,
00:01:12:17 weird, interesting, exciting stuff.
00:01:15:12 Where does the idea to have your head
00:01:18:05 under a platter singing to you come from?
00:01:22:26 We should probably put that clip in right now.
00:01:26:28 [Music]
00:01:41:18 Stop that.
00:01:47:13 Explain.
00:01:48:28 Okay, a lot of my ideas come are based on juxtapositioning
00:01:54:18 things that aren't usually put together you know, be it...
00:01:58:12 I mean it think that even goes for my music
00:02:00:20 and I guess it comes out in videos also.
00:02:03:24 Do you... is there anything that you've come up with,
00:02:06:03 I guess for this first batch of shows where you've been excited
00:02:10:01 that you've been able to pull off like something especially
00:02:12:21 kind of like visually off the wall.
00:02:14:16 Well, most of the time, I am actually not sure at all
00:02:16:27 if it's going to work out.
00:02:18:19 And I think a lot of how it turns out in the end
00:02:22:21 is actually defined more by how it's edited
00:02:25:00 than by how it's conceived originally.
00:02:29:18 And a lot of it is sort of fixed in editing, so to speak.
00:02:34:24 Not like this show at all.
00:02:36:03 Everything we do is flawless.
00:02:38:22 We could be broadcasting live.
00:02:40:23 But then I don't think I would make my hair look the same.
00:02:41:28 It would be the same, it is live actually.
00:02:43:21 We should let people know that.
00:02:45:09 Shot like the date and time running.
00:02:48:18 What about... a lot of stuff that I've read
00:02:51:20 in regards to Mechanical Royalty,
00:02:53:14 your latest record, is that..
00:02:55:29 it's pretty bright when you take those off.
00:02:59:28 Okay, continue.
00:03:01:28 But with Mechanical Royalty... I've read a lot about a bit.
00:03:04:23 People love it, it's an awesome record and then B.
00:03:08:16 You know, Spookey Ruben is this great sound writer who puts up
00:03:11:26 super interesting music and it's hard because, you know, there is
00:03:15:00 a often lot of time between your records and they're like, you
00:03:17:16 know, it's hard for you to sort of pick up momentum in life.
00:03:19:15 Well I guess what makes Spookey Ruben different is that from,
00:03:23:02 lets say, a band that... like an indie band that has a career,
00:03:28:03 that's consistently putting out records is that,
00:03:30:11 I am not a band, you know, I am not really and I don't feel like
00:03:34:14 unnecessarily need to go through that machine of...
00:03:39:09 okay we're going to put out an album
00:03:40:27 and then we're going to go on tour
00:03:42:19 and then we're going to put out another album,
00:03:44:13 and then we're going to go on tour again.
00:03:45:18 And then we are going to put out another album
00:03:47:16 and then we are going to go on tour again.
00:03:49:01 That's like, I just don't feel.. to me it's like...
00:03:50:27 I think I am much more interested in sort of artistic,
00:03:56:29 just letting me be happy with the art and the music
00:04:02:04 and stuff is much more important to me than like.
00:04:05:00 Was there a period of time like sort of during I guess like the
00:04:06:28 nineties sort of TVT area, where that was hard to get away from,
00:04:09:20 where it was hard to get away from that system of like,
00:04:11:24 you put out a record every two years and tour it
00:04:13:22 and that sort of like...
00:04:16:03 Yeah, I think I kind of after my first album
00:04:19:25 and going on tour for like 2 years straight,
00:04:22:09 basically I think a lot of my dreams of being musician
00:04:26:05 were kind of shattered and I kind of had to...
00:04:28:18 I told a lot of people to go away and I kind of have to,
00:04:33:08 after a couple of years I had to sort of
00:04:35:10 rebuild everything from scratch.
00:04:37:12 So I think now I've actually...
00:04:40:27 I think I've a much more realistic point of view.
00:04:44:07 Fans that enter Spookey Ruben know that I am kind of
00:04:49:28 doing my own thing like, they're not...
00:04:51:25 I am not making albums to please my fans,
00:04:55:03 you know what I mean, or making DVDs.
00:04:57:07 Oh I am doing that for the fans.
00:04:59:06 Like I don't really do anything for the fans.
00:05:01:15 You know, I think, they just kind of come to me
00:05:04:18 whenever I am ready.
00:05:07:28 And they're just like, I am excited that Brandon Kenning
00:05:09:22 is talking on a wooden phone.
00:05:11:19 It's sort of like the feeling what happens?
00:05:13:29 We need to throw that in right now too,
00:05:15:28 so people have some idea what that is.
00:05:42:18 [Music]

00:05:47:23 Alright sweet!
00:05:49:14 We're going to come back to point blank.
00:05:51:05 Spookey Ruben, it's cut to beer. Back with more Talk Show Night.
00:00:01:29 Welcome back to Talk Show night.
00:00:03:09 We're here with our friend Spookey Ruben.
00:00:05:08 And we're going to play a little game that we like to call,
00:00:08:22 Quick Pitch.
00:00:10:14 Band Edition!
00:00:11:27 Alright!
00:00:12:27 Basically the premise of this game is that
00:00:15:28 we're going to name a famous song
00:00:17:09 and you are going to give us an idea,
00:00:21:00 sort of elevator pitch style
00:00:22:24 of what the treatment for that video would be
00:00:25:13 in all Spookey Ruben music video directed world.
00:00:29:28 Okay!
00:00:31:01 And if you pitch us enough strong ideas,
00:00:35:28 you win what's in this trunk.
00:00:37:28 Yeah!
00:00:39:23 -Surprise! -Okay!
00:00:41:21 Let's start things off with
00:00:44:08 Paradise by the Dashboard Light by Meat Loaf.
00:00:50:00 It starts out, there is like 5 penguins
00:00:53:06 being led by a small dog like a little poodle.
00:00:58:11 Alright!
00:00:59:20 And they're on their way to a barber shop.
00:01:03:21 When they get to the barber shop
00:01:05:24 there is teacher kind of like charachter
00:01:10:09 who also... he is a teeter/barber type person.
00:01:17:06 Yeah!
00:01:18:10 And he sort of teaches this song to them,
00:01:22:20 while they're all sitting in the barber chairs.
00:01:25:24 The dog... but the dog is kind of a king.
00:01:28:15 He is the leader of the penguins.
00:01:30:11 And then in the end the whole barber shop
00:01:38:08 gets filled by like barber stuff foam.
00:01:43:28 I like it! I love it I think.
00:01:46:08 That's perfect!
00:01:47:13 I think we should get in touch with Meat Loaf's people because
00:01:51:10 The best part about that actually is that
00:01:53:14 originally for this bit we thought,
00:01:55:10 oh we'll pitch some ideas
00:01:56:14 and we'll shoot in front of a green screen,
00:01:58:04 it'll be like a funny like throw to.
00:01:59:21 He imagined us on a green trying to green screen like 5 penguins
00:02:02:09 in a barber shop being filled with foam.
00:02:05:04 Flash two.
00:02:07:00 -Next music video pitch? -Next video pitch would be,
00:02:10:26 God gave Rock and Roll to you by Kiss
00:02:15:13 There is all these little kids that are dressed up like
00:02:18:00 all the members of Kiss like they've got the..
00:02:20:04 they're like ages 3 to 5
00:02:22:06 and they've got the Kiss makeup on.
00:02:24:13 And they're in a pool hall but
00:02:29:13 the pool tables are like a mini golf field, on a pool table.
00:02:34:26 So, you play pool but the pool balls have to go over hills
00:02:39:26 and into things.
00:02:41:29 That's actually just a great idea!
00:02:43:28 I think there is money to be made here.
00:02:45:20 -I think we interrupted -Alright!
00:02:48:00 No that's the kind of the whole video.
00:02:51:18 Sweet!
00:02:52:21 I mean it's a whole video
00:02:54:01 and it's a whole like franchise operation
00:02:56:06 that I think together...
00:02:57:28 I feel like Jean Siemens
00:02:59:10 would totally be on board with that idea.
00:03:00:28 Dude if you've got...
00:03:02:03 If it was like a Kiss themed mini golf, giant pool table.
00:03:06:00 Dear Jean Siemens,
00:03:08:15 call us!
00:03:09:22 I didn't know where else to go with that.
00:03:11:28 You nailed it, but thanks.
00:03:15:09 The panel, I think they're bowling upstairs.
00:03:19:18 All you need is love!
00:03:22:27 By The Beatles
00:03:27:20 That's Ted Newgen looking at himself

00:04:09:20 I think you win what's in the chest.
