00:00:47:17 Oh hey it's Talk Show Night.
00:00:48:28 Today in the house we're talking to Joel Gibb of
00:00:50:13 Indie Rock Darlings, the Hidden Cameras.
00:00:53:05 We've got Halifax's Cousins performing in the basement.
00:00:55:24 But first we're hitting the Modern Club
00:00:58:04 to learn how to play piano with Arts and crafts,
00:01:00:20 Electro-rappy now piano dude, Gonzales.
00:01:06:20 [Music]
00:01:14:05 Does it look epic enough?
00:01:15:07 Yeah!
00:01:17:29 We're here inside of the Modern Club right now
00:01:20:19 with Gonzales and contest winner.
00:01:23:10 Do you want to explain how you won this incredible chance
00:01:26:26 to be on Talk Show Night, learning piano from Gonzales?
00:01:30:17 Well, there isn't much to say.
00:01:31:22 I filled out a ballot and I put it into a ballot box.
00:01:34:03 -That's crazy man! -It was pretty exciting.
00:01:35:29 Were there obstacles to you achieving this goal?
00:01:38:11 Well the pen didn't work at first
00:01:39:16 but after a while I just did that circle thing
00:01:42:00 where you made the pen start working and
00:01:43:27 then it was all... it was a piece of cake.
00:01:47:00 It's intentional. That's too encourage a certain iteration,
00:01:49:17 you know, weed out the men from the boys reservoir.
00:01:51:25 What are you looking forward to today
00:01:53:28 in teaching this young man?
00:01:55:03 What do you think is the knowledge
00:01:56:12 that you can impart in your brief time together?
00:01:58:17 I do have some unorthodox methods.
00:02:00:24 Now I want you to look at this piano and I want you to say,
00:02:03:11 -shut up you dumb bitch! -You dumb bitch!
00:02:05:17 There you go. I like to do my little parts
00:02:07:07 to encourage people to look at the piano
00:02:09:03 as a weapon with which you make entertainment.
00:02:12:15 It's not just it's not a toy
00:02:16:09 nor is it something you have to respect so much.
00:02:19:22 I mean, do you respect the piano?
00:02:21:17 I suppose I do yes!
00:02:23:18 I don't! Forget that!
00:02:25:08 -I don't fuck that piano! -It's so large and expensive.
00:02:28:25 I agree. Large and expensive the thing is worth respecting!
00:02:32:15 [Music]
00:02:36:02 Have you improvised at the piano before?
00:02:37:16 Yes!
00:02:38:11 And have you... do you know how to read music?
00:02:40:01 Yes!
00:02:40:26 And how far did you get?
00:02:42:05 I never took lessons, unfortunately.
00:02:44:06 I took lessons for two months but then my piano teacher was
00:02:46:28 unfortunately arrested for child molestation.
00:02:49:25 So it's probably good that I didn't continue.
00:02:51:28 -Did you get molested? -No, no, no, no!
00:02:54:01 Okay, it's very cool!
00:02:55:18 Okay, basically I am going to accompany you and
00:02:57:25 you're going to start to improvise on
00:02:59:06 only the white keys.
00:03:00:15 Now I am going to play such that
00:03:02:18 every white key you can possibly play
00:03:04:11 will sound inside the music.
00:03:06:19 So you're guaranteed not to be able to hit a wrong note.
00:03:10:19 Now when I say a certain word... we need a safe word.
00:03:14:00 This is kind of like a sex game.
00:03:15:02 What do you want your safe word to be?
00:03:16:21 -Sa-sa. -Sa-sa.
00:03:19:12 So when I sa-sa,
00:03:21:12 you'll switch to only improvising on the black keys.
00:03:24:07 Similarly I'll play a harmonic background
00:03:26:29 that'll make the black keys 100% in the music,
00:03:30:04 incapable of playing a mistake.
00:03:32:13 And we're going to switch back and forth, back and forth
00:03:34:28 and we're going to have a big finish
00:03:36:08 on either of the white or the black, depending where we are.
00:03:38:01 And I think you'll see that once
00:03:40:08 the possibility of hitting a wrong note is gone,
00:03:43:05 you'll become master improviser.
00:03:45:00 Because what inhibits us,
00:03:46:00 just like speaking a foreign language,
00:03:47:05 is this sort of inherent shine you have
00:03:49:07 where everything you say is like [Foreign Language].
00:03:52:20 And that's the only thing you can say when you're in Paris
00:03:54:23 then you do feel like a bit of a knob.
00:03:57:01 So you need to feel confident that you won't make a mistake
00:04:01:06 and in that case you'll become just like a smooth French lover
00:04:03:16 in 5 seconds flat.
00:04:05:20 In this case you'll become a musical genius.
00:04:07:28 Okay?
00:04:09:03 [Music]
00:04:24:19 This is the easiest bit we've ever done.
00:04:29:16 I am going to cry, it's so beautiful.
00:04:38:21 We don't even have a real job.
00:04:44:24 Sa-sa!
00:04:48:23 What's your ethic background?
00:04:50:08 -British! -British, okay!
00:05:00:19 Sa-sa Sa-sa!
00:05:12:28 We're going to end now!
00:05:24:08 That was fantastic, that was amazing!
00:05:27:27 -It was fantastic! -Very beautiful!
00:05:29:03 You see how easy it is.
00:05:31:10 So if I go home, I can do this just by myself.
00:05:33:17 Sure, first you've to buy my 14 DVD set
00:05:36:27 and then you can start to get a big buzz there.
00:05:39:24 I think the key is disrespecting the piano.
00:05:43:04 Because people are intimidated
00:05:44:05 especially a grand piano like this.
00:05:46:01 People think you have to be dressed in a silk robe and
00:05:49:16 you've to have the kind of flowing show pen desk locks
00:05:52:21 I have to be able to coax these sounds out of it.
00:05:55:04 But you know, you can be just some kind of,
00:05:57:02 dressed as a boring hipster and still
00:05:59:10 you know, it would work.
00:06:01:08 It would work and I think that's what the lesson
00:06:02:08 we learnt here today was.
00:06:03:28 Right on I think that's a lesson for all of us.
00:00:02:25 Welcome back! Our guest in the living room today
00:00:04:28 is Joel Gibb of The Hidden Cameras.
00:00:07:14 Now these guys play self proclaimed
00:00:09:11 Gay Church Folk music.
00:00:11:02 And they've been doing it since right around
00:00:13:28 the turn of the millennium, I guess.
00:00:15:09 They signed to Monster UK Indie Rough Trade in 2003
00:00:19:07 they just put Origin Orphan on Arts and Crafts records
00:00:21:18 here in Canada.
00:00:22:19 Ladies and gentlemen, Joel from Hidden Cameras!

00:00:29:25 Thanks for coming up man.
00:00:31:05 Makes the entrance feel really ethic.
00:00:33:11 Yeah! I like that!
00:00:35:11 So thank you for coming in and flattering today.
00:00:37:28 -We appreciate it! -Thanks!
00:00:39:03 And your record just came out like this week or last week...
00:00:41:19 a week ago, a week ago today.
00:00:43:17 Yeah!
00:00:44:22 When this airs that'll be like totally not correct anymore.
00:00:46:28 Okay!
00:00:48:03 But I just want to say that.
00:00:49:26 So to contextualize, now people know.
00:00:51:12 So now people know the time frame
00:00:53:05 in which this is taking place.
00:00:54:14 People are artifacting this interview is
00:00:55:19 talking about it, it's one of the best interviews.
00:00:58:07 Yeah, yeah! We have ever done.
00:00:59:28 Our retrospective DVDs of The Hidden Cameras
00:01:02:16 and having kind of achieved sort of status
00:01:06:15 as like a really you know, live band,
00:01:09:26 like you have to see like a real kind of world
00:01:11:13 of much live performance.
00:01:13:09 You recently finished like a new full length record and
00:01:15:06 I am curious if over the course of recording records,
00:01:17:10 the process of trying to capture that kind of energy that
00:01:21:09 is so kind of a defining aspect of the band has become easier.
00:01:27:20 I don't know if that was the goal.
00:01:29:05 Are they separate things for you?
00:01:30:13 Is kind of like an energetic live performance
00:01:32:11 and a quality record, are those?
00:01:34:08 I think those are separate things.
00:01:35:13 I know sometimes when people talk about records
00:01:38:13 they are really expecting it like the live thing.
00:01:42:15 And on the Origin Orphan, as you mention there is a lot of stuff
00:01:43:28 on it that is kind of studio creation.
00:01:45:28 There is a lot of new sounds that hasn't really used before
00:01:49:07 on Hidden Camera's records.
00:01:50:09 Was there concern in adding those in,
00:01:52:02 like what are we going to do to recreate these things live,
00:01:56:11 or is it exciting to think about
00:01:57:28 what you'll have to do to make, you know?
00:01:59:23 Yeah! There was no concern.
00:02:01:00 It was more exciting about sort of opening up the definition
00:02:03:28 of what people think of is the Hidden Cameras.
00:02:06:05 And you know, there are still songs that are like
00:02:10:11 really the band playing,
00:02:11:16 And I don't know, that's kind of live, isn't it?
00:02:14:15 -People playing together. -I think!
00:02:16:04 -Yeah! -The last time I checked
00:02:17:14 We checked the Wikipedia.
00:02:18:27 But some of them are studio creations that were really,
00:02:21:07 you know,
00:02:24:12 based on like little samples,
00:02:25:20 like little guitar riffs and things like that.
00:02:29:07 So now we're playing live to some backing tracks
00:02:32:00 with this new record.
00:02:33:10 Which is exciting... I really like that.
00:02:35:02 Is it weird to be tied to something like,
00:02:37:05 -kind of pre-made. -No I like that!
00:02:40:08 Do you think you can just sell lemonade,
00:02:41:13 the other like 10 people and just...
00:02:44:05 No I like the idea of, you know, the lap top artists.
00:02:47:22 I like the idea of being like a 10 piece laptop.
00:02:52:23 So they're just playing their laptop
00:02:53:29 and then everybody just can dance and perform.
00:02:56:13 Yeah!
00:02:57:17 You know you're just so weight down by guitar
00:02:59:29 The guitar and tuning in
00:03:02:02 and I just want to like dance around and perform.
00:03:04:18 Yeah, you can free yourself from the tourney of tuning.
00:03:07:02 Oh yeah!
00:03:08:18 I think it might be a musical preposition.
00:03:10:19 Just get the cordless mic.
00:03:13:06 You really like technology, it's really like
00:03:15:17 But we don't have one right now.
00:03:16:20 Well you got to get that.
00:03:17:24 How expensive is a cordless mic?
00:03:19:20 Well I kind of have one right now. I could...
00:03:21:16 You could just steal that,
00:03:23:14 if you run out of this interview right now.
00:03:25:25 Are these good for live shows?
00:03:27:17 No!
00:03:30:13 I'd like to imagine you holding up a tiny lap mic like,
00:03:34:29 maybe like Hidden Cameras doesn't mean with a dude
00:03:36:28 That guy is enormous, right?
00:03:38:13 I saw him on TV and it's just crazy.
00:03:41:19 Yeah! Kind of like...
00:03:43:21 Twirl around your finger.
00:03:44:27 That'd be a kind of good thing.
00:03:47:19 Yeah! Someone has to do
00:03:48:24 like there is innovators every generation.
00:03:52:25 Well I've got to use this mic with Janet Jackson.
00:03:55:00 Oh dude, you've had that?
00:03:56:09 Well we did that show with Toronto Dance Theatre.
00:03:58:17 We've done two but the last show I had a one of these.
00:04:02:08 I was able to dance around.
00:04:03:26 And was it awesome?
00:04:05:09 It's hard to dance, play guitar and sing at the same time.
00:04:08:01 Did you try stealing that mic?
00:04:10:05 -No! -Did you think about it though?
00:04:12:07 No!
00:04:14:12 Good for you! You passed the test.
00:04:18:07 I am good house guest!
00:04:19:09 Yeah!

00:04:24:03 But we're going to take a break

00:03:52:18 Okay we're back with more Joel from The Hidden Cameras.
00:03:56:15 We're going to get into some sort of pseudo game thing
00:03:59:14 we like to play where there is a chance for you to win
00:04:01:17 what's in this chest.
00:04:03:14 But we're going to get into basically naming
00:04:07:03 things that suck or things we hate.
00:04:09:28 Okay!
00:04:11:09 There are right answers for all of these and if you answer them
00:04:13:01 all correctly like we said, you win what's in the chest.
00:04:15:27 And the first question is, what's the worst movie?
00:04:18:28 -Ever? -Ever!
00:04:20:27 Like bad-good or bad-bad?
00:04:24:11 Interpret as you will.
00:04:26:22 Okay, bad movie that's kind of good is of course
00:04:28:18 something like Show Girls or...
00:04:30:13 Oh yeah!
00:04:31:23 Or even The Glitter, I thought it was actually kind of insane.
00:04:34:00 I think have heard great things about Glitter.

00:04:48:03 -Oh, yeah? -Yeah!

00:04:51:02 We are required to spend like 30 seconds talking about it
00:04:53:13 so, that's done.
00:04:55:15 Next question, worst record?
00:04:57:13 -The new U2 is probably. -Probably the worst record ever.
00:05:00:29 Great answer! What's the worst country?
00:05:04:08 The worst country?
00:05:05:11 Yeah!
00:05:08:18 Can I say Canada?
00:05:10:05 -Yeah! If that's... -No!
00:05:12:08 I think... reason being it's really important for you,
00:05:16:08 for a person to be able to criticize
00:05:17:24 their own country, you know.
00:05:19:22 Yeah, absolutely! What's the worst thing about Canada?
00:05:21:24 What makes it the worst country?
00:05:25:11 We're kind of apolitical, kind of sit on the fence.
00:05:27:15 We collaborate in illegal wars
00:05:30:28 and we need a new prime minister.

00:05:46:19 And its like does he even understand music?
00:05:49:00 Like I can't imagine him being like, what a beautiful song.
00:05:51:01 I bet Jack Lane can play like mean Honky-tonk.
00:05:53:15 That guy has got Honky-tonk in his blood.
00:05:55:14 Lets get Jack Lane in the basement.
00:05:57:16 Yeah! Like with a grand piano down there.
00:06:00:28 I mean, funny thing is I actually think it could happen.
00:06:03:04 Next question.
00:06:04:24 We've got a few ones left, let's do one more.
00:06:07:01 I could list them off and you can pick
00:06:08:29 which one you feel the strongest about.
00:06:10:13 Worst city in Canada, worst neighborhood in Toronto
00:06:13:26 or worst interview?
00:06:18:08 I don't know what to say?
00:06:20:23 All of them!
00:06:21:28 I am joking.
00:06:24:18 Worst interview, bad phoners.
00:06:27:02 When you can't even see them.
00:06:29:07 Phoners are awkward though, I guess.
00:06:30:22 Someone who does interviews and you don't get the sense of
00:06:32:21 someone like pausing to think.
00:06:34:11 Like you just think that they're done and then you start talking
00:06:35:23 and then they start talking and there is that like,
00:06:37:08 then you both apologize.
00:06:38:29 It's like being on a first date.
00:06:41:10 Yeah! I hate it, I just hate it!
00:06:43:08 You know what, I'll say you answered worst interview
00:06:44:29 correctly by saying that phoners suck
00:06:46:26 and you win what's in the chest.
00:06:49:03 Okay, just based on saying phoners?
