VOLUME 5-4 BATTLE OF THE BANDS
Battle of the Bands contests are a good opportunity for young bands to gain valuable experience showcasing their music to large audiences. Supernova.com is an online community for indie bands and a leader in coordinating these contests. We gave video cameras to some of the bands in one Supernova battle to capture the excitement from the band's perspective.

00:00:28:28 Supernova Battle of the Bands
00:00:30:08 is best described as an opportunity for bands.
00:00:34:03 It is a contest.
00:00:35:28 It's generally a live show,
00:00:37:28 although, we also do online battles and contests.
00:00:41:16 The people that enter Battle of the Bands
00:00:43:16 are generally the bands
00:00:45:18 that have limited opportunities at their disposal.
00:00:48:18 So a lot of beginner bands, a lot of young bands
00:00:52:00 but also you sometimes get bands that enter that...
00:00:55:12 they don't care even about competing.
00:00:56:28 They just know that there is going to be an audience there.
00:00:58:28 So they want to get their music out.
00:01:01:16 ♪ [Music]
00:01:10:08 I think the Battle of the Bands definitely helps to expand.
00:01:12:18 Like I said, you are seeing so many different styles.
00:01:14:13 It's not only you are playing, you are being influenced
00:01:16:14 with all these different styles coming together.
00:01:17:28 So lot of a new stuff, you know
00:01:19:25 it actually influences the stuff we are hearing.
00:01:22:06 [Music]
00:01:26:18 There is a lot that the bands get out of it.
00:01:28:03 So the gig itself, the preparation for the gig,
00:01:32:26 all the networking that goes on during the gig.
00:01:36:17 So play.
00:01:38:28 This is 5.1 Delay.
00:01:41:28 We are little bit -.
00:01:43:28 I feel like nervous, kind of pumped.
00:01:45:28 Really excited, we worked pretty hard past few weeks.
00:01:49:28 ♪ [Music]
00:02:05:18 supernova.com plays a key integral role because
00:02:09:29 it is in of itself a social network for indie-bands.
00:02:13:28 You have the option to just sign up
00:02:16:03 and have profile and interact and promote
00:02:18:21 and do whatever you want to do.
00:02:20:07 Or you can also elect to participate in gigs
00:02:23:02 or other opportunities.
00:02:24:28 So once a band has decided that they want that
00:02:28:12 then our booking staff will contact them, fill them out,
00:02:31:26 find out more information about them.
00:02:33:03 See what level they are
00:02:34:29 and where it would be appropriate for them to play.
00:02:36:24 Find out if they're available, and then once they're booked
00:02:39:17 there is a meeting where we meet all the bands.
00:02:42:13 And then the show is like three or four weeks later.
00:02:44:28 But when we meet the bands,
00:02:46:28 it's kind of like a tutorial, a bit of a boot camp,
00:02:49:28 understanding of what the show is all about.
00:02:51:28 They get manuals very organized.
00:02:54:14 See you boys at show tomorrow.
00:02:56:19 It's all good. Try your best.
00:02:57:28 This is a definitely good way to get started because
00:03:01:22 there are still so many bands, there are so many people.
00:03:04:28 The best way to build your fan base is by playing live gigs.
00:03:08:24 It's the best way, also working your social networks.
00:03:11:10 And that's why with Supernova you kind of have both worlds
00:03:15:17 for the indie-band, which is the online social networking world
00:03:18:28 for promotion and staying in touch with your fans
00:03:21:22 and making new fans and playing live
00:03:23:05 which is giving them the live you, the live product,
00:03:27:03 the live brand, whatever you want to call it.
00:03:29:29 ♪ [Music]
00:03:33:18 It's such a cliché
00:03:34:24 but you get out of it what you put into it.
00:03:36:13 It really is that way.
00:03:37:19 It is not the end-all be-all by any means.
00:03:38:28 This is going to hopefully
00:03:41:03 one of many, many gigs you're going to play.
00:03:42:28 But this is the gig you're playing right now.
00:03:45:04 So make the most of it.
00:03:47:18 Even if you generate five new fans out of it, it was worth it,
00:03:51:10 because those five might tell another five.
00:03:54:12 Come on give it a big hand for Altered Escape.
00:03:58:23 It's our first Battle of the Bands.
00:04:00:16 Yeah, we were kind of nervous.
00:04:06:14 You know network with the other bands, practice,
00:04:08:23 put on your best show.
00:04:10:06 Bring as many people as you can because the other bands are
00:04:13:08 bringing out as many people as they can to see you guys.
00:04:15:21 And whether you win or not, it doesn't matter.
00:04:17:23 Just interact, do your best
00:04:19:27 and try to engage your fans, as much as you can.
00:04:24:03 Every time we come together,
00:04:26:03 every time that we've a competition.
00:04:29:02 It makes this better as a person and the band.

00:04:33:29 it's about having that bond.
