Though James Mercer has been a little more active in his Shins duties over the past few months after two years off and a band overhaul, the new Shins line-up played their first show last night in Eugene, Oregon. The new band consists of Modest Mouse drummer Joe Plummer, Crystal Skulls’ Yuuki Matthews and singer/songwriters Richard Swift and Jessica Dobson. Together, they covered Bowie’s “Ashes to Ashes.” James Mercer tries to imitate Bowie, a bit. You can watch that video above.

In other Shins news, they’re continuing to tour a bit into the fall before we’re promised a new album in early 2012, the first since a million years ago 2007’s Wincing the Night Away, and the first to be released through Mercer’s own Aural Apothecary label, through Columbia. The only Canadian date right now is on September 22 in Toronto.
